Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd has sparked major debate after delivering a scathing assessment of Frank Lampard’s summer transfer business at Coventry City.
The former Rangers striker did not hold back when discussing the Sky Blues’ recruitment strategy following their return to the Premier League.
Boyd’s Blunt Verdict
Speaking on air, Boyd launched a direct attack on the direction Coventry are taking in the transfer market.
“Frank Lampard is getting this Coventry squad completely wrong this summer. They’re wasting money chasing overpriced players when they should be strengthening the spine of the team. If they carry on like this, they’ll be in a relegation scrap by Christmas — and Lampard will only have himself to blame.”
The comments immediately went viral among football fans, with many Coventry supporters reacting angrily while others admitted Boyd had raised uncomfortable questions.
Boyd’s criticism centres on what he sees as misplaced priorities in the transfer window. While Coventry have moved for players such as Loum Tchaouna, Aurèle Amenda and continue to chase Carl Rushworth, the pundit believes the club are not addressing the areas that will decide their Premier League survival.
“You can sign flashy attackers all you want, but if the foundation isn’t solid, you’re going to get found out,” Boyd continued.
“Lampard knows what it takes to compete at this level. That’s what makes this more frustrating. He should be building a side that can dig in and grind out results, not just one that looks good on paper.”
The remarks have divided opinion. Some Coventry fans have accused Boyd of talking nonsense and pointed to Lampard’s successful Championship title-winning campaign as proof he knows what he is doing. Others have suggested the former striker may have a point about the need for greater balance in the squad.
Boyd remained unmoved by the backlash.
“I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to tell it as I see it. Right now, Coventry’s summer business looks unbalanced, and that could cost them.”
