West Ham continue search for attacking reinforcements with Haji Wright among top targets
West Ham United are stepping up plans to assemble a squad capable of securing an immediate return to the Premier League after relegation to the Championship.
Now under the guidance of Nuno Espírito Santo, the Hammers are aiming for automatic promotion, with the Portuguese manager hoping to repeat the success he enjoyed when he led Wolves to the Championship title in 2018 with a remarkable 99-point campaign.
Although West Ham are yet to make a marquee signing this summer, they still have until September 1 to strengthen their squad. The club’s transfer activity has so far centered on outgoing deals, with Crysencio Summerville and Mateus Fernandes both leaving in lucrative transfers.
Attention is now expected to shift towards new arrivals, particularly in attack.
According to Football Insider, Coventry City striker Haji Wright remains firmly on West Ham’s shortlist as the club looks to add more firepower ahead of the new season. The USA international is one of several forwards being monitored, alongside FC Metz pair Habib Diallo and Pape Moussa Fall. Sunderland’s Eliezer Mayenda had also been considered before completing a move to French side Stade Rennais.
West Ham have not cooled their interest in Wright, who enjoyed an outstanding campaign as Coventry secured promotion to the Premier League under Frank Lampard. The 28-year-old scored 17 goals and registered one assist, underlining his importance to the Sky Blues’ successful season.
Wright also featured for the United States at the World Cup, although his involvement was limited to a substitute appearance during the group-stage victory over Australia.
The forward remains under contract until June 2027, but reports suggest Coventry could consider a sale rather than risk his value declining as his deal runs down.
Meanwhile, West Ham are also exploring overseas alternatives. Metz striker Habib Diallo is believed to be available for a reduced fee following the French club’s relegation from Ligue 1. The experienced forward scored four goals and provided one assist in 25 league appearances last season.
A move for Wright would represent a significant statement of intent from West Ham. After proving himself in the Championship and helping Coventry earn promotion, many expected the American to test himself in the Premier League rather than return to England’s second tier.
However, if the Hammers can convince him to join Espírito Santo’s project, Wright could become a key figure in their bid for an immediate return to the top flight. With several attacking options still under consideration, supporters will be watching closely to see who arrives before the transfer window closes.
