Middlesbrough could find it difficult to compete financially with Wolves, West Ham and Burnley in the race to sign Rennes midfielder Jordan James.
Boro are among the clubs showing interest in the Welsh international, but reports suggest they may struggle to match the wages that some of their Championship rivals are capable of offering.
James remains under contract with Rennes, but his future in France appears uncertain after he spent last season on loan at Leicester City. Despite Leicester’s disappointing campaign ending in relegation to League One, the 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive individual season.
James scored 11 goals and was named the Championship’s Young Player of the Year, significantly boosting his reputation and attracting interest from several clubs.
Middlesbrough Could Struggle to Match Rivals’ Wages
Middlesbrough, Wolves, West Ham and Burnley have all been linked with a move for James this summer, but Boro could face a significant financial obstacle.
Teesside Live reports that Middlesbrough would be keen to bring the midfielder to the Riverside, but the overall cost of the deal could make an agreement difficult.

«“Boro have spent big so far this summer, but will struggle to compete with the kind of wages that the other three sides can offer.”»
Rennes are reportedly looking for around ÂŁ10 million for James, a figure that should be within reach of all four interested clubs.
Boro Still Have a Chance in the Transfer Race
Middlesbrough’s financial disadvantage is understandable given that Wolves, West Ham and Burnley were all competing in the Premier League last season. Their greater financial resources and parachute payments give them more flexibility when it comes to wages.
However, that does not necessarily rule Middlesbrough out of the race.
Boro have already shown a willingness to invest heavily this summer and remain one of the bigger spenders in the Championship. The club could also structure an attractive package through promotion bonuses, performance incentives and a potential improved contract if James helps them return to the Premier League.
Money may not be the only factor influencing the midfielder’s decision either.
James is likely to have ambitions of returning to the Premier League, but regular playing time and the opportunity to become an important player could also be major considerations.
That could work in Middlesbrough’s favour.

Middlesbrough have enjoyed an impressive transfer window so far, bringing in several talented players, while Kim Hellberg’s approach could make the club an attractive destination for James.

All four clubs are expected to challenge for promotion this season, meaning there is no obvious choice for James at this stage.
