Leeds United could be facing a significant goalkeeping dilemma over the coming weeks as preparations for the summer transfer window gather pace.
The club has already begun planning for the off-season, but uncertainty remains over the futures of several senior goalkeepers. At the end of this month, Karl Darlow, Illan Meslier, and Alex Cairns are all set to be out of contract, raising the possibility that Leeds could lose three first-team goalkeepers in a single summer.
If that happens, new signing Lucas Perri would be the only senior goalkeeper currently under contract heading into next season.
Meslier’s departure from Elland Road now appears almost inevitable. The French shot-stopper was dropped to third-choice goalkeeper by Daniel Farke and has not featured for the first team since that decision was made.
Alex Cairns is also widely expected to move on after spending much of last season involved with the Under-21 squad rather than the senior setup.
Meanwhile, recent reports have suggested that Karl Darlow’s future is far from certain, with no major progress made regarding a potential contract extension.
Leeds United Receive Major Boost in Pursuit of Premier League Goalkeeper
The situation surrounding Darlow has become even more intriguing over the past week following reports that Leeds are actively exploring the market for a new goalkeeper.
According to The Chronicle, the Whites have shown interest in Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope. The report claims the experienced England international could be available this summer as Newcastle look to reshape their goalkeeping department.
That process appears to have already begun. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday that Newcastle have reached an agreement to sign Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.
The arrival of Jaouen could pave the way for Pope’s departure, with any potential transfer fee likely to be considerably lower than the £10 million Newcastle paid to sign him.
Latest Developments Could Signal Karl Darlow Exit
After an impressive campaign, many Leeds supporters believed Darlow had done enough to earn a new contract.
However, recent developments have cast doubt over that possibility. The club’s reported interest in Nick Pope, combined with the absence of any concrete update on Darlow’s contract situation, suggests Leeds may be preparing for life without the veteran goalkeeper.
If that proves to be the case, the 49ers ownership group deserve credit for moving quickly to identify a proven replacement who could be available at a reasonable price.
Leeds must ensure they head into next season with a stronger squad than the one that secured Premier League survival this year. Judging by their early activity in the transfer market, it is clear the club’s hierarchy are already working to strengthen key areas and build a team capable of taking another step forward.
