Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu was at the heart of the side that exceeded expectations by securing a respectable 14th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
His impressive performances attracted interest from several established Premier League clubs ahead of the summer transfer window. However, Ampadu quickly put any speculation to rest by signing a new long-term contract with Leeds, underlining his belief in the club’s ambitions.
The Welsh international’s commitment was further highlighted by the fact that his new deal reportedly contains no relegation clause, a clear indication of his confidence in Leeds’ direction and his desire to remain a central figure in their future plans.
While Ampadu’s future is settled, uncertainty continues to surround several members of the squad, with defender Pascal Struijk among the players whose long-term future remains unresolved.
Ampadu eager for Struijk to stay
Struijk has entered the final year of his contract and is believed to be weighing up the possibility of pursuing a new challenge away from Elland Road this summer.
Leeds would ideally like to retain the Dutch defender, but the club are also prepared to listen to offers should he decide against signing an extension. With no intention of losing a player of his calibre for nothing next year, Leeds are keen to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
Ampadu admitted that he would be disappointed to see Struijk depart and made it clear that he hopes his teammate remains part of the club’s journey.
Speaking to Leeds Live, Ampadu said:
“I hope that everyone can be here.
“I think we’ve achieved something great this season, and I believe that everyone wants to go and achieve greater things. So I think obviously it’d be very sad to see anyone going, obviously Pascal included.”
Leeds may need to make a firm decision
Although Daniel Farke would prefer Struijk to commit his future to the club, the ongoing uncertainty is far from ideal as Leeds prepare for another Premier League campaign.
With pre-season approaching, Leeds require clarity. Waiting until the latter stages of the transfer window for a final decision could leave the club scrambling to find a suitable replacement if Struijk chooses to move on.
Both Farke and the Leeds hierarchy will be hoping for a resolution before the squad returns for pre-season training next month, allowing them to shape their plans with confidence.
The last thing Leeds need is a prolonged contract saga overshadowing preparations for the new season. Whether Struijk decides to stay and extend his deal or seek a fresh start elsewhere, an early decision would be in the best interests of all parties involved.
