£100m star wants to join Leeds United relegation rivals

Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has already warned that the club’s second season back in the Premier League is expected to be even more demanding than the first. Seeing one of last season’s fellow relegation candidates prepare to spend more than £100 million on a single player only highlights the challenge facing the Whites.

Daniel Farke is eager for Leeds to show greater ambition in the transfer market, but the club must also remain mindful of the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Ratio regulations, which limit spending based on revenue.

Despite those financial restrictions, Leeds continue to push ahead with plans to strengthen the squad. Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande remains a priority target, and a club-record bid has not been ruled out if the right opportunity presents itself.

The wider Premier League market, however, shows no signs of slowing down. Clubs continue to spend aggressively, and one of Leeds’ relegation rivals from last season is now attempting to complete a blockbuster deal worth more than £100 million.

Sandro Tonali wants Tottenham move

Tottenham have attacked the transfer market with real intent as they look to avoid another disappointing campaign near the bottom end of the table.

The north London club are reportedly willing to outbid Manchester United for Mateus Fernandes and are also pushing hard to land Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

According to Sky Sports News, Newcastle have already rejected Tottenham’s opening offer, but Tonali is keen on the switch this summer.

The Italian international has given the green light to the move, provided the two clubs can agree on a transfer fee. His representatives have already reached an agreement with Spurs over personal terms, with the midfielder set to earn around £275,000 per week if the transfer is completed.

Following Nottingham Forest’s £120 million-plus sale of Elliot Anderson, Newcastle are in no rush to negotiate and are demanding well over £100 million before considering Tonali’s departure.

Premier League spending gap continues to grow

Although Tottenham finished 17th in each of the last two Premier League seasons and were comfortably outperformed by Leeds during the 2025/26 campaign, their financial position allows them to compete for elite talent.

The Premier League’s Squad Cost Ratio rules favour established clubs with significantly higher revenues, allowing Spurs to pursue players such as Tonali and compete with Manchester United for expensive signings without breaching spending limits.

Leeds, by contrast, must continue to operate more cautiously after just one season back in the top flight. The Whites are being forced to focus on value in the market, including free transfers and carefully structured deals.

The hope at Elland Road is that continued Premier League stability, combined with the planned stadium expansion, will increase the club’s revenues and eventually allow Leeds to compete much more aggressively in future transfer windows.
