Leeds United handed James Trafford concern as Newcastle United revive transfer interest
Leeds United now look increasingly likely to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer following a series of significant developments behind the scenes.
The club are currently in discussions with Karl Darlow over a new contract and are keen to keep the experienced Welshman at Elland Road for another season.
However, his future remains uncertain amid interest from Manchester United, who are reportedly considering him as an experienced deputy to Senne Lammens at Old Trafford.
As a result, Leeds may have little choice but to intensify their search for a new goalkeeper in the transfer market. The concern for the Whites is that one of their preferred targets has emerged as the leading option for one of their Premier League rivals.
Newcastle United rekindle interest in James Trafford
James Trafford is expected to leave Manchester City this summer after spending a season as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s understudy at the Etihad.
He is one of Leeds’ priority targets and could become the club’s new number one should Karl Darlow decide against extending his stay in West Yorkshire.
However, Trafford is unlikely to make a final decision before the end of the World Cup, where he is currently part of England’s squad.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle United have reignited their interest in signing the Manchester City goalkeeper ahead of the new campaign.
The Magpies completed the signing of Ewen Jaouen from Reims last week, but remain keen to recruit another goalkeeper as they prepare for the possible departure of Nick Pope.
Trafford was a player Newcastle targeted last summer, and they have now re-entered the race to secure his signature.
His decision to delay talks until after the World Cup could frustrate Newcastle, who are eager to finalise their goalkeeping department as quickly as possible.
Leeds must not miss out
Leeds are not planning a major squad overhaul this summer. Instead, the focus is on adding genuine quality and recruiting players capable of making a real impact in the Premier League.
A move for Trafford would align perfectly with that strategy. The young goalkeeper is regarded as one of England’s brightest prospects in his position and would represent a significant statement of intent from the club.
If Darlow departs Elland Road, Leeds will require more than a backup option between the sticks. They need a commanding presence capable of inspiring confidence throughout the defence.
Lucas Perri has yet to fully convince that he can be the long-term answer, while Newcastle’s willingness to consider offers for Nick Pope raises questions over whether he fits Leeds’ ambitions.
Trafford, by contrast, has the potential to solve Leeds United’s goalkeeping dilemma for years to come. Although any transfer fee would be substantial, it could prove to be a worthwhile investment in a player with the talent, temperament and profile to become a cornerstone of the team for the foreseeable future.
