Coventry City handed transfer green light to sign World Cup star for free

This World Cup 2026 star will soon see his contract run out, and Frank Lampard’s Coventry City can swoop in

Coventry City can sign Axel Tuanzebe on a free transfer this summer after his deal with Burnley expires. And the DR Congo star, who is representing his country at World Cup 2026, would be a valuable addition to Frank Lampard’s side.

The Sky Blues are Premier League once more, and building a squad that can hold its own in the English top flight is priority No. 1. Frank Onyeka has been the first name through the door after spending last season on loan at the Coventry Building Society Arena, but there will need to be some more additions by the time the window slams shut.

Reports suggest that a centre-half is near the top of boss Lampard’s wishlist after Bobby Thomas was tied down to a new deal, and Burnley man Tuanzebe would be a shrewd acquisition.

The 28-year-old began his career with Manchester United and was a product of their academy system. He made his debut at just 19 and looked like a future star when pocketing Kylian Mbappe in a 2-1 Champions League win against PSG six years ago.

But loan spells would soon follow. He enjoyed stints at Aston Villa, Napoli and Stoke City before leaving United for Ipswich Town in 2023. At Portman Road, he helped his side gain promotion and played a stellar season in the top flight.

Upon the Tractor Boys’ relegation, he joined Burnley and played sparingly as his side failed to survive the drop. But despite making only 14 appearances and his team finishing in 19th place, Tuanzebe showed glimpses of promise. In a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in January, he produced 19 clearances. He also grabbed a goal in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

Tuanzebe completed 85 per cent of his passes and was a commanding presence in the heart of defence, though it must be said he struggled at times with injuries. His deal with Burnley will soon expire and current boss Mike Jackson believes he can still make an impact in the top flight. He said: “I think he’s been really strong.
