Crystal Palace threaten Leeds United move for priority midfield target

Crystal Palace enter race for Leeds United target Shea Charles as Southampton hold firm on £30m demand

Leeds United are facing fresh competition in their pursuit of Shea Charles, with Crystal Palace now joining the race for the Southampton midfielder.

The Whites have been working hard to secure the 22-year-old this summer, but negotiations have stalled as Southampton continue to demand a premium fee.

Leeds have already seen two bids rejected, reportedly worth £20m and £25m, with the Saints refusing to budge from their valuation of at least £30m.

Crystal Palace threaten Leeds’ hopes

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Crystal Palace have now identified Charles as a key midfield target.

The Eagles are expected to strengthen in midfield amid growing speculation that Adam Wharton could attract interest from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs this summer.

Palace can offer European football and have greater financial flexibility than Leeds, meaning they could meet Southampton’s asking price if they decide to make a formal bid.

Leeds may now need to move quickly if they want to avoid losing one of their priority targets.

Despite Palace’s interest, Charles is believed to favour a move to Elland Road, giving Daniel Farke’s side some encouragement as talks continue.

Leeds must avoid overpaying

Leeds have tracked Charles for around 18 months, with Farke a long-time admirer of the Northern Ireland international.

Following Southampton’s failure to secure promotion and with Charles entering the final year of his contract, Leeds viewed him as a market opportunity.

However, Southampton’s £30m valuation looks excessive for a player yet to establish himself consistently at Premier League level.

Crystal Palace’s interest could spark a bidding war, but Leeds should remain disciplined. If Southampton refuse to lower their demands, the Whites may be better served walking away rather than committing such a significant fee for an unproven player.
