Leeds United have a verbal agreement in place with Brighton for the sale of Pascal Struijk in a deal worth £20 million during the ongoing summer transfer window.
The two clubs have agreed the framework of the transfer, with Brighton expected to submit a formal bid soon before arranging a medical and finalising personal terms with the defender.
Leeds preparing for life after Pascal Struijk
Struijk has entered the final year of his contract and has so far rejected Leeds’ offer of a new deal. While the Whites would have preferred to keep one of their most important defenders, they are unwilling to risk losing him for nothing next summer.
With his exit now appearing increasingly likely, Leeds have already begun identifying potential replacements. Here are three centre-backs who could fill the void.
Ladislav Krejci
Ladislav Krejci impressed despite Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League last season and has emerged as one of Leeds’ leading targets.
Wolves are expected to demand around £26 million, a fee that remains within Leeds’ budget. The Czech international offers leadership as captain of his national team, while his physicality and composure on the ball make him an ideal replacement for Struijk in Daniel Farke’s system.
Maxime Esteve
Leeds could also look to capitalise on Burnley’s relegation by pursuing Maxime Esteve.
The French defender is another naturally left-footed centre-back capable of building attacks from the back. He gained valuable Premier League experience last season and could become available for a reasonable fee if Burnley are forced to sell.
His profile closely mirrors Struijk’s, making him one of the most logical replacements available.
Jhon Lucumi
Jhon Lucumi has enhanced his reputation with impressive performances on the international stage and is expected to attract significant interest this summer.
The Bologna defender is comfortable on the left side of central defence and is renowned for carrying the ball forward and playing progressive passes through opposition lines.
With Bologna potentially open to selling for the right price, Leeds could have an opportunity to sign a defender capable of replacing Struijk while raising the overall quality of the back line.
