Scotland’s search for a new manager has taken an unexpected twist, with a surprise favourite emerging to replace Steve Clarke following the national team’s World Cup exit.
Clarke stepped down after seven years in charge, bringing an end to one of the most successful managerial spells in modern Scottish football. Now, attention has turned to who will lead the Tartan Army into the next chapter.
Ange Postecoglou Moves to the Front
Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite to become Scotland’s next manager.
The Australian has overtaken experienced names including David Moyes, Alex Neil and Martin O’Neill in the latest betting market, with odds of 5/2 making him the leading candidate for the vacancy.
Postecoglou is no stranger to Scottish football after transforming Celtic during his two seasons at Parkhead. He won five domestic trophies before moving to the Premier League, earning widespread praise for his attacking philosophy and man-management.
His previous experience managing Australia at international level also strengthens his credentials for the Scotland job.
Clarke Brings an End to Historic Reign
Clarke resigned shortly after Scotland’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup was confirmed.
Despite opening the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Haiti, defeats to Morocco and Brazil left Scotland relying on other results to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. Those results failed to arrive, ending their World Cup campaign.
In his farewell message, Clarke paid tribute to his players and supporters.
“The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now.
“They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their gaffer. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.”
His departure closes a remarkable seven-year spell that saw Scotland qualify for back-to-back European Championships and their first World Cup since 1998.
Other Leading Candidates
While Postecoglou currently heads the betting, several other high-profile names remain in contention.
David Moyes and Alex Neil are both among the leading Scottish candidates, while former Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill and ex-Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand have also been linked with the role.
Meanwhile, former Belgium and Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has been suggested as a possible option if he leaves his current position after the World Cup.
Former Scotland international Pat Nevin believes Martinez’s experience at the highest level would make him an intriguing appointment, although convincing a manager of his stature to take on a rebuilding Scotland side may prove difficult.
A Defining Appointment
The Scottish FA now faces one of its biggest decisions in recent years.
Clarke restored belief by ending Scotland’s long wait for major tournaments, but expectations have risen after another group-stage exit. His successor will be tasked not only with maintaining regular qualification but finally guiding Scotland beyond the opening round of a major tournament.
The Bottom Line
Ange Postecoglou has emerged as the surprise favourite to replace Steve Clarke, but the race remains wide open.
With experienced international managers and familiar Scottish faces all in contention, the Scottish FA’s next appointment could shape the future of the national team for years to come.
