West Ham have entered the race to sign Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, but the Championship club could face an uphill battle to secure the Belgian’s signature.
The Hammers are looking to strengthen their midfield following Mateus Fernandes’ big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur, with Engels emerging as one of their leading targets after two impressive seasons at Celtic.
The 22-year-old has developed into one of the Scottish champions’ standout performers. During his debut campaign, Celtic captain Callum McGregor praised Engels’ ability to adapt quickly despite arriving with a significant transfer fee, describing him as a “real talent” with even greater potential.
Engels built on that promise during the 2025-26 season, registering seven goals and eight assists in all competitions. His creativity, composure, and all-round midfield quality have made him one of the most sought-after young players in Britain and a potential replacement for Fernandes, who contributed eight goal involvements for West Ham last season.
According to TEAMtalk, West Ham have now joined Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for the Belgium international. Celtic are reportedly willing to listen to offers in the region of ÂŁ25 million, although they are under no pressure to sell.
Nottingham Forest have already tested Celtic’s resolve with a formal bid, but the Scottish club rejected the offer, signaling they will only consider proposals that meet their valuation.
Despite their interest, West Ham face several major obstacles in the pursuit of Engels. The club recently reported losses exceeding ÂŁ104 million, meaning finances remain tight and significant spending could depend on player sales. With Jarrod Bowen expected to stay, the Hammers have limited opportunities to generate additional transfer funds.
Their absence from the Premier League is another challenge. After suffering relegation last season, West Ham cannot offer top-flight football, while several of Engels’ other suitors can. Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Fulham, and Tottenham all have the advantage of Premier League competition, with Palace and Sunderland also able to offer European football next season.
Given Engels’ rapid rise at Celtic and his growing international experience with Belgium, a move to a Championship club may be less attractive than opportunities elsewhere.
West Ham’s chances of completing the deal could improve if they raise funds through player sales, with speculation continuing over the future of winger Crysencio Summerville. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is expected to provide further updates as the summer window unfolds.
