West Ham United have placed a firm £85million valuation on midfielder Mateus Fernandes after being approached for his signature this summer.
The Hammers, relegated from the Premier League last season, are in the process of reshaping their squad and have made it clear that the highly-rated young talent is not for sale on the cheap.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have made initial contact with the player’s agents in the last 48 hours. The Red Devils are exploring a possible move for the midfielder as they look to strengthen their squad under new permanent head coach Michael Carrick.
West Ham are very clear on their valuation. “The price decided by West Ham for Mateus Fernandes is £85 million,” Romano reported. “He will leave for sure because he’s not a player for the Championship. But West Ham are very clear on the price.”
Fernandes has impressed with his technical ability, vision, and composure in midfield, making him one of the standout performers for the club even during a difficult season. Several other European clubs are also believed to be monitoring the situation, but United appear to have made the first concrete approach.
The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder is seen as a player with huge potential, and West Ham are determined to secure a significant fee to help fund their rebuild as they prepare for life in the Championship.
Personal terms are not expected to be a major obstacle should a club meet the asking price, but the Hammers are in no rush to sell and will only consider serious offers.
This latest development comes as West Ham look to raise substantial funds through player sales following relegation. The club dropped out of the top flight for the first time in 14 years and are now working hard to assemble a competitive squad for an immediate promotion push.
Fans have mixed reactions to the possibility of losing Fernandes, with many acknowledging his talent but hoping the club can secure a strong fee if he does depart.
The summer transfer window remains open until early September, and more movement is expected from the London club as they continue their rebuilding process.
