Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards dramatically revamped the linebacking corps. DeMarcus Walker gave the defensive line additional vigor and bite. What was perhaps most encouraging was how quickly two Bears draft picks improved. During the first half of 2023, Gervon Dexter was a hardly noticeable defensive lineman. However, as an inside pass rusher, he became a real threat. Tyrique Stevenson, the team’s surprising leader in interceptions, was a surprise to everyone, especially as a cornerback.
Because of his exceptional skill, ESPN analyst Matt Bowen selected him as the 2024 breakout player.

Tyrique Stevenson, cornerback, Bears: Bowen. In his debut season, Stevenson recorded 11 pass breakups and four interceptions. With his tough play style and ball abilities, he was a natural match in Matt Eberflus’ defense and might have breakthrough performance in 2024.
To far in his tenure, general manager Ryan Poles has only once traded up in a draft. That was the previous year, when he selected Stevenson in the second round by moving up. It’s getting easy to understand why. His combination of physical attributes, agility, and ball handling ability make him a potentially outstanding cornerback. It helps that he has a fiery disposition when playing the game. There’s a mountain-sized chip on this guy’s shoulder. The Bears have another excellent corner in him if he continues to apply it to his game.
His rise and Jaylon Johnson’s development into one of the NFL’s top players might make the Chicago Bears defense unwelcome to play on. There are several excellent defenses with a strong cornerback. The finest of them have two. If Poles manages to locate another pass rusher to support Sweat, it may become even better. Bowen’s forecast regarding Stevenson would be quite plausible in the event of a dynamic pass rush. When pressure is applied consistently to the opposing quarterback, cornerbacks are most dangerous.
