Last summer, many Leeds United supporters were left frustrated after the club failed to land a marquee signing before the transfer deadline. That disappointment came despite the Whites enjoying a largely successful recruitment drive ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Leeds brought in 10 new players during the summer window, but not every arrival was met with enthusiasm. When Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined the club, plenty of fans questioned the move due to his lengthy injury record at Everton and concerns over his reported salary.
The club also secured the signings of Noah Okafor from AC Milan and Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer—two additions that did not generate much excitement among supporters.
However, the trio proved their doubters wrong. Calvert-Lewin finished the campaign with 15 goals, while Okafor and Nmecha contributed a combined total of 15 goals, making them the club’s leading scorers throughout the season.
Leeds United target attracting interest from Nottingham Forest
Despite a respectable first season back in the Premier League, there were several occasions when Leeds lacked a clinical edge in front of goal. Calvert-Lewin also endured a lengthy scoring drought around January, raising concerns about the club’s attacking depth.
As a result, reports suggested that the 49ers were eager to strengthen the forward line ahead of next season.
One name heavily linked with a move to Elland Road is Belgian striker Lois Openda. According to several reports, the 26-year-old is expected to leave Juventus this summer after a disappointing campaign in Italy.
That development could present an opportunity for Leeds, but they are not alone in the race. Tutto Juve reports that Nottingham Forest are also monitoring the striker’s situation.
Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe has already confirmed that the club is prepared to invest this summer, with the Whites believed to be targeting four or five new signings before the start of next season.
Leeds should steer clear of this deal
Based on the details that have emerged so far, a move for Openda appears to carry significant risk for Leeds United.
According to Tutto Juve, Juventus are hoping to recover most of the £35 million they paid to sign the Belgian forward. Considering his performances this season, that valuation looks difficult to justify.
Openda struggled badly in front of goal, scoring just two times in 37 appearances across all competitions. The fact that Juventus are already looking to move him on after just one season is another warning sign for potential suitors.
The report adds that the Serie A side would prefer a permanent sale, although they may consider a loan deal that includes either an obligation or an option to buy.
Perhaps most concerning for Leeds are the financial demands involved. While clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Monaco are reportedly interested, Openda’s wage demands have already emerged as a major obstacle.
For a club that remains disciplined with its spending and wage structure, committing a large transfer fee and substantial salary package to a player coming off such a disappointing season would be a gamble Leeds may be better off avoiding.
