Leeds United expected to splash out on three upgrades in huge summer rebuild

Leeds United recently confirmed that Ethan Ampadu has signed a new long-term contract, keeping him at Elland Road until 2030. The agreement represents a significant statement of intent from the club ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Daniel Farke’s side secured their top-flight status after an impressive season that surpassed expectations. Having been widely tipped for relegation before the campaign began, Leeds gradually found their rhythm and enjoyed a strong second half of the season.

The Whites ultimately finished 14th in the Premier League, comfortably exceeding many pre-season predictions.

Looking ahead to next season, Farke has already stressed that the club must continue to match his ambition. The Leeds manager is expected to hold discussions over a new contract this summer and has made it clear that he sees his future at Elland Road.

Chairman Paraag Marathe recently revealed that extending Ampadu’s deal was a straightforward decision, underlining the midfielder’s importance to the club’s long-term plans.

Leeds Expected to Strengthen in Three Key Areas

Farke has repeatedly insisted that Leeds must invest wisely in the transfer market this summer. The German pointed to the club’s 2020 Premier League campaign under Marcelo Bielsa, suggesting that a lack of sufficient reinforcement eventually contributed to their decline.

Marathe has assured supporters that the ownership group remains committed to backing the team. Leeds spent more than £100 million on new arrivals last summer, and reports suggest another substantial investment could be made during the upcoming transfer window.

According to Football Insider, Leeds are targeting reinforcements in three crucial areas of the squad, which would likely result in at least three new signings arriving before the start of next season.

Previous reports have also indicated that recruitment plans will focus on players capable of fitting into Farke’s preferred 3-5-2 system.

Where Leeds Could Improve

With the club seeking players suited to their tactical approach, additions in defence, midfield and attack appear the most likely.

Defensively, Joe Rodon’s injury towards the end of last season exposed a lack of depth at centre-back, forcing Leeds to reshuffle their options. The club currently possesses four recognised first-team central defenders, but that number may not be enough to sustain a back-three formation throughout a demanding Premier League season.

In midfield, Leeds could benefit from another high-quality option in the centre of the park. Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach are expected to play leading roles next season, but further competition would strengthen the squad alongside Sean Longstaff, Ilia Gruev and Ao Tanaka.

Further forward, Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains Leeds’ primary attacking threat. However, his lengthy goal drought during the middle part of the campaign highlighted the need for additional firepower. As a result, the possibility of the 49ers Enterprises ownership group bringing in another striker cannot be dismissed.
