Sunderland miss deadline as Leeds handed major chance to sign £20m Dutch World Cup star

Leeds United are entering a crucial phase of the summer as they continue shaping their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

One area that could soon demand urgent attention is the goalkeeping department. Reports linking Karl Darlow with a free-transfer switch to Manchester United have created fresh uncertainty, potentially forcing Leeds to speed up their search for a new number one.

Away from the goalkeeping situation, Leeds are already active in the transfer market and appear to be making positive progress on one of their key targets. The Whites are reportedly edging closer to a club-record move for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Ousmane Diomande after reaching a verbal agreement with the player.

However, Leeds remain eager to strengthen further in defence, particularly in the full-back positions, and they could now have an opportunity to land a proven Premier League performer after Sunderland failed to meet a key deadline.

Lutsharel Geertruida back on the market

Sunderland signed Lutsharel Geertruida from RB Leipzig on loan with an option to make the move permanent.

The Dutch defender impressed during his first Premier League campaign and earned a call-up to the Netherlands squad for the World Cup as a replacement for the injured Jurrien Timber.

According to Sky Deutschland journalist Philipp Hinze, Sunderland’s deadline to activate the previously agreed permanent deal has now expired.

The Black Cats have missed the opportunity to secure Geertruida for the agreed £20 million fee, meaning the defender is once again available on the open market.

RB Leipzig are keen to sell him this summer, with several clubs monitoring his situation ahead of the transfer window.

Leeds have previously been linked with an interest in Geertruida, with Daniel Farke believed to be a strong admirer of the versatile defender and eager to add quality depth at full-back.

Although Sunderland have not completely abandoned hopes of signing him, they are hoping to negotiate a lower fee and bring the price below the original £20 million agreement.

Leeds should enter the race

James Justin proved to be a valuable asset last season, ensuring Leeds were never left exposed whenever Gabriel Gudmundsson or Jayden Bogle were unavailable.

He developed into a dependable utility defender, capable of filling multiple roles across the back line and even operating in a back three when needed.

Despite Justin’s reliability, Leeds would still benefit from adding greater quality and competition in the full-back areas. Lutsharel Geertruida represents an outstanding opportunity to secure a defender with proven Premier League experience.

Having already adapted to the demands of English football during his spell with Sunderland, Farke would not have to worry about a lengthy settling-in period. At a reported fee of around £20 million, the Dutch international could prove to be excellent value for money and a smart addition to Leeds United’s squad.
