Celtic have agreed a deal to complete their first signing of the summer after moving ahead of Rangers and several overseas clubs in the race for Marcelo Saracchi.
The Uruguayan left-back is set for a permanent return to Parkhead after impressing during his loan spell last season, where he helped Celtic secure a Premiership and Scottish Cup double.
Saracchi made 27 appearances across all competitions despite missing two months through injury and quickly became a popular figure among supporters thanks to his energy and attacking style down the left flank.
The deal.
Celtic have held positive talks with the player’s representatives and are now closing in on a permanent agreement with Boca Juniors.
The Argentine giants are willing to sell after informing the 28-year-old that he does not feature prominently in their plans under the club’s new manager. A fee of around £2 million is expected to be enough to secure the transfer.
Competition beaten.
The Hoops have had to fend off significant competition to get the deal over the line.
Rangers, several MLS clubs and teams in Turkey were all monitoring Saracchi’s situation, but the defender has made it clear that a return to Celtic is his preferred option.
The player is understood to have sought assurances over his role in the squad before giving the green light to the move.
Why Celtic moved quickly.
With pre-season training beginning this week, Martin O’Neill wanted new signings through the door as early as possible.
Saracchi’s experience of Scottish football means he can settle immediately and provide competition and depth in a key area of the squad.
The bottom line.
Celtic have agreed a deal. Rangers have missed out. And Marcelo Saracchi looks set to become the first new arrival of the summer at Parkhead.
