Another member of Celtic’s legendary Lisbon Lions is set to receive a lasting tribute, with plans underway to honour club icon John Clark with a bronze statue in his home village of Chapelhall.
Nearly 60 years after Celtic became the first British club to lift the European Cup, the heroes of Lisbon continue to be celebrated for one of the greatest achievements in football history.
John Clark to Be Immortalised
John Clark, who passed away last June at the age of 84, is the latest Lisbon Lion to be recognised with a permanent memorial.
Born in Chapelhall in 1941, Clark made 182 appearances for Celtic and played a key role in Jock Stein’s historic European Cup-winning side in 1967.
Following his football career, Clark remained closely connected to his local community, running several businesses in Chapelhall before later moving to Holytown.
Now, those contributions—both on and off the pitch—are set to be honoured with a bronze statue in the village where his story began.
Community Comes Together
The project is being led by Airdrie South councillor Michael Coyle, who is working alongside North Lanarkshire Council and a community committee to make the tribute a reality.
Fundraising efforts have already been supported by local businesses, community groups and residents, while renowned sculptor Douglas Jennings has been commissioned to create the monument.
The statue will reportedly depict Clark lifting the European Cup and will stand on a marble plinth near the entrance to Chapelhall, creating a landmark for both locals and visiting Celtic supporters.
Speaking about the project, Councillor Coyle described Clark as “a true Chapelhall and footballing legend” and said the local community is thrilled that one of its greatest sons will receive the recognition he deserves.
Joining Celtic’s Immortals
Clark will join a growing list of Lisbon Lions who have already been immortalised through statues.
Legendary manager Jock Stein, captain Billy McNeill and winger Jimmy Johnstone are all honoured with statues outside Celtic Park, while Bobby Lennox and Tommy Gemmell have also been recognised in their hometowns.
Plans are also progressing for a tribute to fellow Lisbon Lion Jim Craig.
The latest project ensures another member of Celtic’s greatest-ever team will be remembered for generations to come.
A Fitting Tribute
The unveiling comes as Celtic prepare to mark the 60th anniversary of their historic European Cup triumph, with special tributes planned throughout the 2026/27 season to celebrate the achievements of the Lisbon Lions.
For many supporters, John Clark’s statue will serve as another powerful reminder of the team that changed Scottish football forever.
The Bottom Line
John Clark’s remarkable contribution to Celtic and his local community will soon be honoured with a permanent bronze statue in Chapelhall.
Almost six decades after the Lisbon Lions conquered Europe, another Celtic legend is set to take his rightful place among the club’s immortal heroes.
