NEWCASTLE HAVE IDENTIFIED THEIR NEXT ATTACKING WEAPON

Newcastle United and Aston Villa are keeping close tabs on AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun ahead of a possible summer transfer.

The 24-year-old USMNT international has thrived in Ligue 1 since departing Arsenal in 2023. He is coming off a remarkable campaign that saw him crowned Monaco’s Player of the Season. Across 43 appearances in all competitions, Balogun registered an impressive 24 goal contributions, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists. His excellent form has also carried over to the international stage, most notably with a brace in the United States’ 4-1 World Cup victory over Paraguay.

According to French publication Jeunes Footeux, Newcastle are particularly keen on the striker and have already opened discussions with Monaco in an effort to push a deal forward. However, any concrete move may depend on the Magpies first creating room within their squad.

The report claims Newcastle must offload forward Yoane Wissa before they can seriously pursue Balogun. Selling the attacker would free up both squad space and transfer funds, allowing the club to advance negotiations. Wissa endured a difficult first season at St James’ Park, finding the net just three times in 28 appearances.

Monaco, meanwhile, are believed to be demanding at least €50 million before entering meaningful negotiations, despite Transfermarkt valuing Balogun at around €40 million. The American forward remains under contract with the Ligue 1 side until 2028, placing Monaco in a strong negotiating position.
