Aston Villa could face big transfer decision on midfielder in talks over new contract

Aston Villa Yet to Decide Lamare Bogarde’s Future Amid Growing Interest

Aston Villa have yet to make a final decision on Lamare Bogarde’s future, with several clubs showing interest in the versatile midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old has held preliminary discussions over a new contract at Villa Park, but negotiations are still at an early stage and no agreement is close to being reached.

As a result, some uncertainty remains over Bogarde’s long-term future, with Villa willing to consider offers should an acceptable bid arrive.

Unai Emery is a strong admirer of Bogarde and has relied on him as a valuable squad option over the past two seasons. During that period, the Dutch youth international has made 62 appearances in all competitions, including 44 outings last season.

However, despite his involvement, Bogarde started only 11 Premier League matches during the campaign, although that figure was more than double the five league starts he managed in 2024/25.

He also featured prominently in Europe, starting eight Europa League matches. While Emery remains convinced of his potential, Bogarde’s route to regular football in midfield is currently blocked by established options such as Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana.

In addition, Victor Lindelöf was preferred in the double-pivot role during the closing weeks of the season, while Youri Tielemans, Ross Barkley and John McGinn continue to provide Emery with plenty of alternatives in midfield.

Speaking about Bogarde in March, Emery praised the player’s development and versatility.

“He has been with us for three and a half years, and we are working with every player. After going out on loan and returning, we spent a lot of time working with him individually.

“His development process has been positive, both individually and with the group. The experiences he has gained, including his loan spell, have helped him grow. This season has been his most consistent yet.

“He reached a very high level again yesterday and produced a fantastic performance. His versatility is extremely valuable because he can play in midfield, at centre-back or as a right-back.”
