Steve Clarke has stepped down as Scotland manager with immediate effect after the Tartan Army’s World Cup exit was officially confirmed.
The 62-year-old leaves his role just weeks after signing a new four-year contract, bringing an end to a memorable seven-year spell in charge of the national team.
Scotland Confirm Clarke’s Exit
The Scottish FA announced Clarke’s departure shortly after Scotland’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup was confirmed.
A statement read:
“Steve Clarke has stepped down as Scotland Men’s Head Coach.”
It added that Scotland’s most successful modern manager had decided to end his seven-year reign following the country’s group-stage exit.
Scotland began the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Haiti before suffering defeats to Morocco and Brazil, finishing third in Group C and missing out on a place in the knockout stages.
Clarke’s Emotional Farewell
Clarke paid an emotional tribute to his players and Scotland supporters after announcing his decision.
“The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now,” he said.
“They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their Gaffer.”
He concluded his farewell by thanking Scotland supporters and wishing his successor every success.
“Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.”
Scottish FA Pays Tribute
Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell thanked Clarke for transforming the national team during his time in charge.
“While we are all disappointed to have exited the World Cup at the group stage, we must not lose sight of the undeniable progress made during Steve’s seven years in charge,” Maxwell said.
He praised Clarke for ending Scotland’s long wait for major tournaments, leading the nation to back-to-back European Championships before securing their first World Cup appearance in 28 years.
Maxwell also paid tribute to the travelling Tartan Army, describing them as exceptional ambassadors for Scotland throughout the tournament.
The Legacy He Leaves
Although Scotland’s World Cup campaign ended in disappointment, Clarke leaves having overseen one of the most successful periods in the national team’s modern history.
He guided Scotland to three consecutive major tournaments after years of heartbreak and restored belief among players and supporters alike.
His final match in charge was the 3-0 defeat to Brazil—a result that ultimately brought Scotland’s World Cup journey to an end.
The Bottom Line
Steve Clarke’s Scotland reign is over.
After seven years, three major tournaments and countless memorable moments, the man who ended Scotland’s long wait for World Cup football has decided the time is right to step aside.
Attention will now turn to who the Scottish FA appoints as the next manager to lead the national team into a new era.
