Gary Neville Shares His Thoughts On Coventry City After Announcing A Permanent Deal For Frank Onyeka

Gary Neville has given his honest assessment of Coventry City’s latest move, praising the club’s ambition after they secured the permanent signing of midfielder Frank Onyeka from Brentford.

The Sky Blues confirmed the permanent transfer of the Nigerian international this week, marking another significant step in their rebuild as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.

Speaking on his popular podcast The Overlap, the Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit shared his thoughts on the deal and what it means for Coventry’s prospects next season.

Neville, who has been following Coventry’s progress closely, started by acknowledging the club’s smart recruitment strategy.

“Coventry have done some very good business again,” Neville said. “Frank Onyeka is a solid, experienced Premier League midfielder who knows what it takes to compete at this level. Bringing him in permanently shows they are serious about not just surviving but trying to establish themselves in the Premier League.”

The former England defender went on to highlight Onyeka’s strengths and how he could fit into Frank Lampard’s system.

“He brings energy, physicality, and good technical ability in midfield. If he can maintain that midfield right then he’s got a great chance of doing something,” Neville added, referring to Onyeka’s ability to dictate play and protect the defence.

Neville believes the signing is part of a bigger picture for Coventry as they look to build a competitive squad.

“They’ve made some clever signings this summer. They know they can’t go toe-to-toe financially with the big clubs, so they’re targeting players who can make an immediate impact and fit their style. Onyeka is exactly that type of player — reliable, experienced, and hungry to prove himself again in the Premier League.”

The pundit also touched on the wider context for Coventry, who returned to the top flight after a long absence.

“It’s a tough division, but Lampard has them organised and they’ve got a good mix of youth and experience. Adding someone like Onyeka gives them balance in the middle of the park. He can shield the defence and support the attack. If they can keep him fit and performing at a high level, he’ll be a very important player for them.”

Neville warned, however, that one signing alone won’t be enough.

“Coventry still need two or three more key additions to be competitive week in, week out. The Premier League is relentless, and they’ll need depth. But this deal for Onyeka is a positive step in the right direction.”

The reaction from Coventry fans has been overwhelmingly positive, with many seeing the permanent move as a vote of confidence in the project under Lampard.

Onyeka himself has expressed excitement about staying at the club, saying he is looking forward to helping the team compete at the highest level.

As the summer transfer window continues, Coventry are expected to remain active in the market as they look to strengthen other areas of the squad.

Gary Neville’s comments have been widely shared on social media, with fans appreciating his balanced and insightful take on the club’s progress.

Coventry City will be hoping Onyeka can hit the ground running when the new Premier League season kicks off, and many will be watching to see if the midfielder can indeed “do something special” as Neville suggested.

This latest signing adds to the growing optimism around the Sky Blues as they prepare for what promises to be a challenging but exciting campaign.
