Leeds United Cool Interest in Orjan Nyland as Goalkeeper Search Continues
Leeds United are unlikely to pursue a move for veteran Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland this summer, despite his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, the Whites remain determined to strengthen their goalkeeping department during the current transfer window, but Nyland is no longer viewed as a serious target. Instead, the club is focusing on younger long-term options.
O’Rourke: Leeds Expected to Look Elsewhere
Speaking about the situation, O’Rourke acknowledged Nyland’s outstanding World Cup campaign but believes Leeds are unlikely to make an approach.
“He’s had a great World Cup. He’s definitely put himself in the shop window at the right time after leaving Sevilla. He was superb for Norway, helping them reach the quarter-finals, and his performance in the 2-1 victory over Brazil was exceptional.”
He added:
“Nyland has valuable experience in England with Aston Villa, Norwich, Bournemouth and Reading, but I’d still be surprised if Leeds made a move. They’re looking for a goalkeeper, but at 35, he doesn’t really fit the profile.”
Nyland’s Journey Across Europe
Nyland has enjoyed a well-travelled career since leaving Norway more than a decade ago. After progressing through the youth systems of Mork IL, Volda TI and IL Hodd, he spent time at Molde before moving abroad.
The experienced shot-stopper has since played in Germany, England and Spain. His latest spell came with Sevilla, where he made 66 appearances over three seasons, conceding 85 goals while recording 16 clean sheets.
However, the Norwegian international became a free agent after opting against signing a new contract with the La Liga side, having also lost his place as first-choice goalkeeper to Odysseas Vlachodimos.
Leeds Prioritising Long-Term Goalkeeping Solution
Nyland’s reputation has soared following his standout displays at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, particularly his match-winning performance against Brazil, which helped Norway secure a memorable place in the quarter-finals.
Despite those heroics, Leeds appear committed to a different transfer strategy. Rather than investing in an experienced short-term option, the club is prioritising younger goalkeepers with long-term potential.
Their primary focus remains Zion Suzuki of Parma, who is viewed as a goalkeeper capable of becoming the club’s long-term No. 1.
With Lucas Perri failing to fully convince during his first season at Elland Road, Leeds are eager to reinforce the position—but all indications suggest Orjan Nyland is no longer part of their transfer plans.
