England have been handed a potential injury scare ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final against Argentina after fresh footage of Jude Bellingham emerged following the dramatic quarter-final victory over Norway.
The Real Madrid midfielder has been England’s standout performer throughout the tournament, producing another match-winning display as his two goals inspired Thomas Tuchel’s side to a hard-fought 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway. However, attention has now shifted from his heroics to his fitness after videos circulating online appeared to show the midfielder in visible discomfort after the final whistle.
With England preparing for one of their biggest matches in years, any concerns surrounding Bellingham’s availability have immediately become a major talking point.
Bellingham inspires England into the semi-finals
England’s route to the last four was anything but straightforward.
Norway stunned the Three Lions by taking the lead through Andreas Schjelderup before Bellingham restored parity just before half-time with a composed finish after Anthony Gordon’s incisive pass.
The game remained finely balanced throughout the second half before Bellingham struck again in extra time, reacting quickest after Ørjan Nyland failed to hold Morgan Rogers’ powerful effort.
The victory secured England’s place in the World Cup semi-finals, where reigning champions Argentina now await in Atlanta.
Bellingham’s brace also took his tally to six goals at the tournament, reinforcing his status as one of the competition’s outstanding performers and further strengthening his growing reputation as England’s talisman on the biggest stage.
Footage raises fresh injury concerns
Despite his match-winning performance, concern quickly emerged after clips filmed following the game began circulating across social media.
The footage appears to show Bellingham repeatedly clutching his left shoulder while walking toward the media area after the final whistle. The midfielder also looked uncomfortable as he prepared for his post-match interviews, prompting immediate speculation about a possible injury.
Additional photographs from inside the stadium appeared to show the 23-year-old holding the same shoulder while speaking with England manager Thomas Tuchel shortly after the match.
The images have fuelled fears that Bellingham may have aggravated a previous problem just days before England’s crucial semi-final.
Reports claim England medical staff are monitoring him
Several reports from Argentina have suggested England’s medical team are closely monitoring the midfielder’s condition.
According to TyC Sports, Bellingham remains expected to start against Argentina despite the concerns, although the report claims England’s medical staff are keeping a close watch on the situation ahead of Wednesday’s showdown.
The outlet also suggested that, if necessary, Bellingham could once again wear protective strapping or a shoulder brace during the match—something supporters have become familiar with during his time at Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Argentine newspaper Olé reported that Bellingham may have suffered a heavy collision with a Norwegian defender during the quarter-final.
The publication noted that he was seen speaking with England physiotherapist Steve Kemp during one of the scheduled hydration breaks before later being spotted holding his shoulder while talking with Tuchel on the touchline.
Neither England nor the Football Association have officially confirmed that Bellingham has suffered a fresh injury.
A shoulder problem that dates back to 2023
The speculation has gained traction largely because Bellingham has a well-documented history of shoulder problems.
His issues began in November 2023 during a La Liga fixture between Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano when he dislocated his left shoulder after an awkward fall.
Although he continued playing for much of the following season while wearing a protective brace, the injury regularly caused discomfort and limited his movement.
Eventually, after completing the club season, Bellingham underwent surgery in London to stabilise the shoulder.
The England international has previously admitted it was one of the most difficult periods of his career.
Speaking about the injury earlier this year, he described the dislocation as the most painful experience he had suffered in football.
He explained that previous dislocations had usually been manageable because he was able to relocate the shoulder himself, but the incident against Rayo Vallecano was far more severe.
According to Bellingham, the shoulder remained out of place until medical staff were able to relocate it, making the experience particularly traumatic.
He also admitted he had been extremely anxious before eventually undergoing surgery, fearing both the procedure itself and the possibility of complications that could affect his career.
Tuchel will be desperate to have his star available
Any absence for Bellingham would represent a huge blow for Thomas Tuchel.
The England manager has repeatedly praised the midfielder throughout the tournament, describing him as a world-class player capable of deciding matches almost single-handedly.
Although Tuchel publicly criticised England’s overall performance against Norway, he singled out Bellingham’s contribution as another example of his remarkable quality under pressure.
England have already been forced to manage several fitness concerns during the tournament.
Reece James has only recently returned from injury, Declan Rice battled illness before the Norway match, while several players appeared exhausted after playing 120 minutes in the intense Miami heat.
Adding uncertainty around Bellingham would create another headache ahead of facing an Argentina side packed with attacking quality and knockout experience.
Bellingham has shown remarkable resilience
One reason England supporters remain optimistic is Bellingham’s history of playing through discomfort.
Throughout much of the 2024–25 season with Real Madrid, he continued producing outstanding performances despite regularly wearing a shoulder brace.
His determination to keep playing while managing pain became one of the defining stories of his campaign, earning admiration from teammates, coaches and supporters alike.
That resilience has continued throughout this World Cup.
Against Norway, Bellingham not only scored twice but covered enormous distances, pressed relentlessly and remained influential deep into extra time despite visible signs of fatigue and cramp.
His post-match comments also reflected his mentality.
Rather than focusing on individual achievements, Bellingham praised the collective effort of England’s squad, describing his teammates as “warriors” and expressing pride in their ability to continue finding ways to win difficult matches.
England still expect him to face Argentina
Despite the growing speculation, there has been no official indication that Bellingham is in danger of missing the semi-final.
The reports emerging from Argentina continue to suggest he is expected to start, albeit with England’s medical staff carefully assessing his condition over the coming days.
Given the importance of the match, Tuchel and his coaching staff are unlikely to take unnecessary risks. However, if Bellingham is medically cleared, few would bet against him taking his place in England’s starting lineup.
With six goals already in the tournament and a reputation for producing his best performances on football’s biggest occasions, England will hope their midfield leader is fully fit when they face Argentina in a blockbuster World Cup semi-final.
For now, the images of Bellingham clutching his shoulder have certainly raised concerns, but unless England provide an official update suggesting otherwise, the expectation remains that their star man will be ready to lead the Three Lions once again in their quest to reach the World Cup final.
