Sunderland Agree Deal Worth £30million to Sign Ligue 1 Left-Back in Shock Transfer

Sunderland have agreed a deal worth £30 million to sign highly-rated Ligue 1 left-back Dayann Methalie from Toulouse in what is being described as a major statement of intent under head coach Régis Le Bris.

The 20-year-old France Under-21 international is set to become one of the most expensive defensive signings in the club’s recent history after the Black Cats moved decisively to secure his services. Sources close to the negotiations confirm that personal terms have been agreed and that only formalities remain before the transfer is officially announced.

Methalie, who stands at 6ft 1in and is comfortable operating as a left-back or left wing-back, has been one of the standout young defenders in Ligue 1. His combination of athleticism, defensive solidity and attacking threat has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, but Sunderland are understood to have moved fastest to get the deal over the line.

A source close to the player said:

“Dayann is excited by the project at Sunderland. He sees it as a big opportunity to develop in the Premier League and under a coach who values young, energetic players. The ambition of the club convinced him.”

Le Bris is believed to have personally pushed for the signing as he looks to strengthen the left side of his defence ahead of a demanding season that will include both Premier League and European football. The Frenchman is known to admire Methalie’s ability to contribute in both phases of the game.

One club insider added:

“This is a significant investment, but the feeling is that Dayann has the potential to become a long-term asset. He is young, hungry and already performing at a high level in France. The fee reflects that potential.”

Toulouse are understood to have reluctantly accepted the offer after it became clear the player was keen on the move. The deal, structured with an initial payment and potential add-ons, is expected to be finalised in the coming days subject to a medical and work permit formalities.

If completed, Methalie’s arrival would represent a major boost for Sunderland as they continue to reshape the squad for life back among England’s elite. Fans will hope the young Frenchman can make an immediate impact and help provide the defensive balance Le Bris is looking for.

Further updates are expected once the paperwork is completed and the player is ready to be unveiled at the Stadium of Light.
