Coventry City owner Doug King has shed light on the club’s strong interest in bringing Gustavo Hamer back to the CBS Arena, explaining why the midfielder remains a priority target as the Sky Blues prepare for life in the Premier League.
Speaking about the potential reunion, King made it clear that the move is about more than just sentiment. While Hamer’s previous success at the club is well remembered by supporters, the owner believes the 29-year-old still has the quality and character to make a significant impact at the highest level.
King said:
“Gustavo knows this club inside out. He understands what it means to wear the shirt and what the fans expect. But this isn’t just about bringing back a popular player. We believe he has the technical quality, the drive and the experience to help us compete in the Premier League.”
Hamer spent three successful years at Coventry between 2020 and 2023, establishing himself as one of the most dynamic midfielders in the Championship before his £15 million move to Sheffield United. Now entering the final year of his contract at Bramall Lane, the Dutch-Brazilian has emerged as a realistic target for a return.
King continued:
“Frank [Lampard] and the recruitment team have looked closely at the profile of player we need. Gustavo offers creativity, goal threat from midfield and a real winning mentality. Those are qualities that can make a difference in a tough league. We feel he can still give us a lot.”
The owner also acknowledged the emotional side of the potential deal, recognising how much Hamer still means to many supporters.
“Of course the fans have a soft spot for him, and rightly so. He gave everything when he was here. But the decision will ultimately be based on what is best for the team moving forward. If the numbers work and he wants to come back, then it is something we will take very seriously.”
Talks between Coventry and Sheffield United are understood to be ongoing, with the fact that the Blades still owe money from the original transfer potentially helping any negotiations. Whether a deal can be completed remains to be seen, but King’s comments have made the club’s thinking clear.
