Jamie Carragher left the Sky Sports studio in no doubt about where he stands after watching Coventry City’s impressive 2-0 pre-season victory over AS Monaco.
The former Liverpool defender, never one to shy away from strong opinions, delivered a passionate and surprising defence of Frank Lampard’s side — and singled out one Coventry player in particular after a performance that clearly caught his eye.
Speaking in the aftermath of the Sky Blues’ dominant display against the Ligue 1 outfit at the CBS Arena, Carragher turned the conversation on its head. Instead of the usual measured analysis, he went on the front foot.
“I’ve been watching this Coventry team closely,” Carragher began. “People have been quick to write them off before a ball has even been kicked in the Premier League. What’s the point in that kind of ruthless criticism when the evidence on the pitch is telling a different story?”

Carragher was referring to the growing narrative that Coventry, newly promoted under Lampard, would struggle to adapt to the intensity and quality of the top flight. “That lad Yirenkyi in midfield was outstanding,” Carragher continued. “The way he carried the ball, the way he won it back, the timing of his passes… that’s Premier League quality. Carragher’s tone was unusually warm when discussing Lampard’s project. While the two men have had their differences in the past as pundits and former players, the Sky Sports star was unequivocal in his support for what he is seeing at the CBS Arena.
“Frank has them organised, they look fit, they look hungry, and they’re playing with belief,” he said. “That’s not easy to create. A lot of promoted teams come up and look scared of the occasion. Coventry look like they have that. The recruitment has been smart — bringing in a player like Yirenkyi shows that — the manager knows what he wants, and the players are buying into it.”
He went further, suggesting that some of the early-season criticism directed at Lampard and his squad had been unfair and premature.
“There’s this idea that because they’re newly promoted they should just be grateful to be there and accept their fate,” Carragher said. “That’s nonsense. Frank has been in this game long enough. He knows what the Premier League demands. And from what I saw against Monaco, especially from Yirenkyi, the players are ready to meet that demand.”
The former England international also highlighted the importance of confidence at this stage of the season. Pre-season results do not always translate into league form, but the manner of Coventry’s performance, and in particular the debut of their new midfielder, clearly left an impression on him.
“You can tell when a team believes in what it’s doing,” he explained. “The distances they covered, the way they recovered the ball, the willingness to play forward — those are signs of a group that trusts the manager’s methods. That doesn’t happen by accident. And when a new signing comes in and immediately looks like one of the best players on the pitch, it gives everyone a lift.”
For Coventry supporters, Carragher’s words will feel like a significant moment. Having spent years outside the top flight, the Sky Blues faithful have grown used to being underestimated. Hearing a high-profile pundit of Carragher’s stature push back against the negativity, while specifically highlighting Caleb Yirenkyi’s man-of-the-match display, carries real weight.
