Westham fans instantly demand major rule change after witnessing what happened in Wolves vs Blackburn
EFL Championship are furious after the opening fixture and are demanding a rule change be implemented for the rest of the season.
On Friday night, the 2026/27 EFL Championship season officially began as Wolverhampton Wanderers welcomed Blackburn Rovers to the Molineux in their first match since being relegated from the Premier League.
Heading into the season, expectations on Wolves are high with many fans believing the club will secure promotion straight back to the top-flight.
However, things didn’t get off to a good start in their opening fixture, as goals from Rovers’ defender Sean McLoughlin and forward Andri Gudjohnsen made it seem that the visitors were going to pick up the three points, despite Wolves taking the lead through Marshall Munetsi.
But, the hosts were eventually able to rescue a point in the match, after Ryan Alebiosu’s handball allowed substitute Raul Jimenez to step up and slot away a penalty in added time to draw the match 2-2.
Although Wolves fans will no doubt be relieved to have at least come away with a point, fans of other Championship clubs were not happy with how Jimenez took his penalty, and many of them have taken to social media to demand the EFL steps in.
As has become popular for many players, Jimenez used stuttering approach to put off Rovers’ keeper Balazs Toth and secure the equaliser.
In this instance though, some fans feel that the Mexican striker took things too far and made it impossible for the goalkeeper to know where to dive, essentially ruining any chances of the goal not being scored.
Sharing footage of the penalty, one fan asked on X: “Seriously, how is that allowed??”
Another claimed: “If goalkeepers can’t move off the line, then the attacker shouldn’t be allowed to do stutter-steps. They need to get rid of this.”
While one joked: “Strictly Come Dancing call up inbound for Jimenez after that walk towards the ball. Just the 3 stutters in that run up.”
And another wrote: “All the new rules they’ve brought in and they’ve done nothing to stop these stupid stutter penalties.”
