West Ham Target Reiss Nelson Becomes Free Agent After Arsenal Exit
West Ham United have been handed a potential transfer opportunity after Reiss Nelson agreed to terminate his Arsenal contract, making the winger available on a free transfer.
The 26-year-old is now a free agent as he considers the next step in his career, with interest reportedly coming from clubs in England and abroad.
Nelson came through Arsenal’s academy and went on to make 90 appearances for the Gunners. However, despite showing flashes of quality, he was unable to establish himself as a consistent first-team regular.
During his time under contract at Arsenal, the winger gained experience through loan spells with Hoffenheim, Feyenoord, Fulham and most recently Brentford. His spell with the Bees last season was disrupted by injury, and although he returned to Arsenal for pre-season, a permanent departure always appeared increasingly likely due to his position in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
West Ham’s Interest Remains
West Ham had already been linked with a move for Nelson, with reports suggesting the Hammers had held discussions over a potential transfer. The situation has now changed significantly following his contract termination.
With no transfer fee required, West Ham and any other interested clubs can now focus entirely on convincing Nelson that their project is the right one for him.
Another advantage is that clubs are permitted to sign free agents outside the traditional transfer window. That means there is no immediate pressure to complete a deal before the September 1 deadline.
However, the latest reports suggest Nelson intends to carefully consider his options, with interest coming from both domestic and overseas clubs. As things stand, no move appears imminent.
Should West Ham Make Their Move?
Arsenal were unlikely to demand a significant transfer fee for Nelson, particularly as they were keen to move him off their wage bill. Nevertheless, his availability as a free agent could make him an even more attractive option for West Ham.
The Hammers already have attacking options such as Jarrod Bowen and Manor Solomon, meaning Nelson would not necessarily need to arrive as an automatic starter. Instead, he could provide valuable depth and competition across the forward positions.
His pace, direct running style and ability to operate on either wing could make him a useful addition to Nuno Espirito’s squad.
There will, however, be competition for his signature. West Ham must also be careful not to commit to excessive wages, particularly when other attacking options may be available.
Nelson’s future is therefore one to watch closely. While there is no deadline pressure to complete a deal, West Ham may benefit from reaching a quick agreement if they are serious about bringing the former Arsenal winger to the London Stadium.
