Ex-PGMOL Chief slams Coventry vs Sunderland referee Simon Hooper for the one massive error he made

The controversy surrounding Coventry City’s 3-1 victory over Sunderland has continued to generate serious debate, with referee Simon Hooper facing questions over one major incident that could have changed the course of the contest.
What should have been a straightforward afternoon of football for Coventry quickly became another talking point for supporters, particularly after a controversial moment involving Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo and Coventry goalscorer Tatsuhiro Sakamoto.
Sunderland supporters have been left frustrated by what they believe was an inconsistent application of the rules, with attention turning towards the decision not to send Angulo off following an apparent hair-pulling incident.
The incident has raised fresh questions about the role of VAR, the responsibilities of the on-field referee and whether the officials missed an opportunity to apply the rules correctly.
Simon Hooper was the man in charge at the Coventry Building Society Arena, but the spotlight has now shifted towards his handling of the controversial moment.
THE INCIDENT THAT HAS SPARKED THE REFEREEING DEBATE
During the encounter, Angulo was involved in an incident with Coventry’s Sakamoto that attracted attention because of an apparent pull of the Japanese winger’s hair.
Hair-pulling incidents have become an increasingly sensitive subject in English football, particularly after several players were dismissed for similar offences during the 2025-26 campaign.
The issue is that pulling an opponent’s hair can fall under violent conduct, which carries the possibility of a straight red card.
That is why supporters were surprised when Angulo remained on the pitch rather than being dismissed.
VAR had an opportunity to examine the incident, but no red card followed.
For Sunderland supporters, the question is simple: if similar incidents have resulted in dismissals elsewhere, why was this particular situation treated differently?
It is a question that has placed additional pressure on the officiating team.
WHY SIMON HOOPER IS FACING QUESTIONS
Hooper’s responsibility was to manage the match, assess incidents and ensure that the laws of the game were applied consistently.
However, the controversy surrounding Angulo has brought renewed attention to the difference between what supporters expect from referees and what actually happens during difficult match situations.
The referee does not necessarily have to identify every incident immediately. That is one of the reasons VAR exists.
But when an incident potentially involves violent conduct, the expectation is that the officials will carefully examine the available footage and determine whether disciplinary action is required.
The decision to allow play to continue without a dismissal has therefore become a major talking point.
For Coventry supporters, the decision did not take anything away from their team’s victory. For Sunderland fans, however, it represents another frustrating refereeing discussion after an already disappointing afternoon.
A DEFEAT THAT LEFT SUNDERLAND WITH MORE QUESTIONS
Beyond the officiating controversy, Sunderland had a difficult afternoon against Frank Lampard’s Coventry side.
The home team started aggressively and took the lead through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, whose first Premier League goal gave Coventry the perfect start.
Taiwo Awoniyi then increased the advantage before half-time after Sunderland struggled to deal with Coventry’s attacking pressure.
The situation became even worse shortly after the restart when Jack Rudoni’s effort deflected off Omar Alderete and found its way into the net.
At 3-0, Sunderland were facing a difficult challenge.
Enzo Le Fée eventually gave the visitors some hope after Ethan Pinnock was penalised for handball following a VAR review. Le Fée confidently converted the resulting penalty.
However, Sunderland could not find another goal to make the closing stages particularly uncomfortable for Coventry.
The match ended 3-1, leaving the Black Cats with another damaging Premier League result.
