Three words. One message. The Old Firm violence isn’t over. The Union Bears were banned from Celtic Park. Celtic FC refused to sell them tickets. The SPFL backed the decision. The ultras group “volunteered” to stay home so other Rangers FC fans could attend. But that’s not the full story.
The Blood
Tomáš Čvančara will never forget March 8. After scoring the winning penalty in the Scottish Cup quarter-final at Ibrox, he didn’t celebrate. Instead, he rushed to intervene during a violent pitch invasion. Moments later, he gave a live television interview with his white shirt soaked in blood. When asked about the stains, he brushed it off. But the image is now burned into Scottish football memory. A steward was carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Flares were launched into crowds. A female police officer was kicked to the ground from behind. Twenty-six arrests have already been made. Police say more are coming.
The Faces
Police Scotland released 15 new CCTV images this week. The public has been asked to study the faces carefully. If you recognize anyone, you are expected to call 101 or contact Crimestoppers. The message is simple: whether you wear blue or green, if you riot, you will be found.
The Defiance
The Union Bears urged Rangers to accept the ticket allocation so ordinary supporters could attend. But when the players walked onto the pitch, massive Union Bears banners still appeared in the away end. A flag carrying the group’s insignia flew over the section. Many visiting supporters wore all black — exactly as the Union Bears had urged in a leaked online message days earlier. Then the Green Brigade responded. They took the Union Bears’ drums. Confiscated. Gone. Photos spread online showing Celtic fans displaying their “souvenirs.”
The Bottom Line
A steward was carried off. A police officer was kicked to the ground. A child was reportedly hit by a coin. A player’s shirt turned red. Twenty-six arrests. More coming. And a ban that still couldn’t keep them out. The violence isn’t over. The defiance isn’t over. And the hunt is only beginning.
