Daniel Farke answered many of his critics last season by guiding Leeds United to a comfortable 14th-place finish in their first campaign back in the Premier League.
The Leeds head coach is entering the final year of his contract, although discussions over a new long-term agreement are expected to be successfully concluded in the coming weeks.
Farke has repeatedly emphasised his desire for Leeds to strengthen aggressively this summer as the club looks to build on its progress. However, chairman Paraag Marathe has also underlined the importance of maintaining financial discipline and complying with the Premier League’s spending regulations.
One area Farke is keen to reinforce is the attack, and that could lead to the departure of a player who played a key role in securing promotion just a year ago.
Leeds’ Transfer Plans Leave Joel Piroe Facing Exit
Joel Piroe finished as the Championship’s leading scorer during Leeds’ promotion-winning season. However, the striker found himself well down the pecking order following the club’s return to the Premier League.
The Dutch forward has been linked with a move away from Elland Road since January, and he ended the campaign without finding the net in the league.
According to The Athletic, Leeds are prioritising attacking reinforcements this summer, a strategy that appears set to have major consequences for Piroe’s future.
With the Whites determined to add more firepower to their squad, the 26-year-old now looks increasingly likely to leave before the transfer window closes.
Piroe is eager for regular first-team football, and his opportunities could become even more limited if Leeds bring in another striker. At this stage of his career, he can hardly afford another season in which he starts only a handful of league matches.
His proven goalscoring record in the Championship is expected to attract interest from several clubs, making a summer departure a realistic outcome.
Farke Has Lost Faith in Piroe at Premier League Level
Piroe was one of Farke’s most trusted players in the Championship, but his role diminished significantly in the Premier League.
Once Dominic Calvert-Lewin established himself in the side, Piroe struggled to regain a place in the starting lineup.
Farke also appeared more willing to turn to Lukas Nmecha, while Brenden Aaronson and Noah Okafor were occasionally preferred in supporting attacking roles ahead of the Dutchman.
The Leeds manager has previously suggested that, despite possessing what he described as “world-class” finishing ability, Piroe may lack some of the physical attributes required to consistently succeed in the Premier League.
With Leeds expected to pursue another striker this summer, all signs point towards Piroe’s time at Elland Road coming to an end.
