Leeds United midfielder ‘expected’ to seal Elland Road exit

Harry Gray began last season training with Leeds United’s senior squad, leading many supporters to believe the talented youngster was on course for a breakthrough into Daniel Farke’s starting XI.

However, during the first half of the campaign, Gray largely remained on the fringes of the first team. While he continued to train with the senior players and earned a handful of matchday squad selections, regular opportunities on the pitch proved difficult to come by.

In January, the young forward secured a loan move to Rotherham United in search of valuable first-team experience. Reports suggested Gray himself was keen on the switch as he looked to accelerate his development through consistent playing time.

His spell at Rotherham did not go entirely according to plan, but it still provided important experience. Gray featured in 20 matches across all competitions, contributing three goals and one assist before returning to Elland Road.

The striker will now be hoping for clarity regarding his future as Leeds prepare for another Premier League campaign.

Leeds United youngster expected to depart

Harry Gray was not the only academy prospect to spend time away from Elland Road last season. Highly regarded midfielder Charlie Crew also left on loan, joining Doncaster Rovers during the first half of the campaign.

Crew made 11 appearances for Doncaster, but the move failed to develop as Leeds had hoped. Upon his return, Daniel Farke admitted that the arrangement simply had not worked out.

As a result, the midfielder returned to West Yorkshire midway through the season and spent the remainder of the campaign back at the club.

According to The Athletic, Crew is now expected to leave Leeds this summer. It remains unclear whether the departure will come in the form of another loan move or a permanent transfer.

Questions remain over Leeds’ pathway to the first team

Crew’s situation could raise fresh concerns about the route from Leeds’ academy into the senior side. Since Archie Gray successfully established himself in the first team, few academy graduates have looked close to following the same path.

Harry Gray remains one of the club’s brightest prospects, yet he was forced to seek regular football elsewhere in order to continue his development.

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha already competing for places, there is no guarantee the teenager will receive significant first-team opportunities next season.

Meanwhile, Wales manager Craig Bellamy recently spoke highly of Jayden Lienou after observing the defender in training. Lienou arrived at Leeds last year and is regarded as a player with considerable potential, but he is still waiting for his senior debut.

Although Farke included him in matchday squads towards the end of the season, the youngster did not make an appearance.

Leeds are also expected to strengthen at left-back this summer by bringing in cover for Gabriel Gudmundsson, a move that could further limit Lienou’s chances of breaking into the first team in the near future.
