Why Scotland Haven’t Been Eliminated From The World Cup Despite Not Being In The Top Eight Third-Placed Teams

Scotland’s World Cup future remains alive—despite Steve Clarke’s side currently sitting outside the eight best third-placed teams.

After a 3-0 defeat to Brazil in their final Group C match, many supporters feared the Tartan Army’s tournament was over. But that isn’t the case.

Thanks to the expanded 48-team World Cup format, Scotland still have a genuine chance of reaching the Round of 32.

Why Scotland Are Still Alive

Scotland finished third in Group C with three points and a goal difference of -3 after beating Haiti before losing to Morocco and Brazil.

Although they currently sit ninth in the ranking of third-placed teams, not every group has finished its fixtures.

That means several teams still have the chance to finish below Scotland, keeping Steve Clarke’s men firmly in the qualification race.

The Results Scotland Need

Scotland’s fate now depends entirely on results elsewhere.

Croatia currently sit above Scotland on goal difference alone. If Croatia lose by three or more goals to Ghana, they would drop below the Scots.

Algeria are also ahead only because of their superior goal difference. A defeat by two or more goals against Austria would see Scotland move above them.

Elsewhere, Scotland will be hoping Egypt beat Iran. That result would leave the third-placed team in Group H on just two points—behind Scotland.

Spain also need to defeat Uruguay. If that happens, Uruguay would finish third with only two points and fail to overtake Scotland.

Finally, Scotland will be watching Uzbekistan’s match against DR Congo. If Uzbekistan avoid defeat—or if DR Congo fail to win by a large enough margin—it could also work in Scotland’s favour.

Clarke Thinks It’s Over

Despite Scotland still having a mathematical chance of progressing, Steve Clarke admitted after the defeat to Brazil that he feared his side were heading home.

The Scotland boss told reporters: “I think we’re going home.”

However, the numbers say otherwise.

A Waiting Game

Scotland no longer control their own destiny, but their World Cup dream is still alive.

Every remaining group-stage fixture could have a huge impact on whether the Tartan Army sneak into the knockout stages as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

The Bottom Line

Scotland are outside the top eight—for now.

But with several groups still to finish, Steve Clarke’s side remain in contention for a place in the Round of 32.

Their fate now rests in the hands of other nations, and the Tartan Army will be watching every remaining match with hope.
