Ange Postecoglou ‘Makes Decision’ on Replacing Steve Clarke as Scotland Manager After World Cup Exit

The former Celtic boss has finally addressed the rumours surrounding the Scotland job.

Ange Postecoglou appears to have made his mind up about the possibility of becoming Scotland’s next manager following Steve Clarke’s resignation after the nation’s disappointing World Cup campaign.

Ever since Clarke stepped down in the aftermath of Scotland’s group-stage exit, speculation has been growing over who will replace the man who guided the Tartan Army to three major tournaments.

Naturally, Postecoglou’s name quickly emerged as one of the favourites.

Having enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Celtic, where he won five domestic trophies and transformed the club’s style of play, many supporters believe the Australian would be an ideal appointment for the Scottish FA.

However, despite being installed as the bookmakers’ favourite, doubts have remained over whether he would seriously consider taking the role.

Reports have suggested the Scottish FA’s managerial budget falls well below the salary Postecoglou earned during his recent club jobs, making any potential deal difficult.

While the links continue to gather momentum, Postecoglou has now addressed the speculation.

When asked about the Scotland vacancy, the former Celtic manager insisted he has not given the role any serious thought.

“I haven’t thought about that yet.

“I understand that when a national team job becomes available my name is going to be mentioned.

“But it’s not the right time to be talking about it. I have a job that I enjoy very much and that’s my focus.”

His comments are unlikely to end speculation entirely, but they suggest there is no immediate move on the horizon despite his status as the leading candidate.

The Scottish FA are expected to consider a number of candidates before making their final decision, with David Moyes, Steven Naismith and several overseas managers also linked with the vacancy.

The Bottom Line

Ange Postecoglou remains one of the favourites to replace Steve Clarke.

But for now, the former Celtic boss has made it clear he isn’t focusing on Scotland, leaving the Scottish FA’s managerial search wide open.
