Latest VAR Findings Will Leave Leeds United Frustrated

Leeds United head into the summer on the back of a largely positive campaign. After securing promotion from the Championship, few expected the Whites to survive comfortably in the Premier League.

Many pundits predicted an immediate return to the second tier, especially given the recent trend of all three promoted clubs being relegated in consecutive seasons.

This season, however, told a different story. Leeds and Sunderland both managed to defy expectations, although they achieved it in contrasting ways. Sunderland collected the majority of their points during the first half of the campaign and ultimately secured a European qualification spot.

Leeds, meanwhile, endured a mixed and inconsistent season before Daniel Farke successfully steadied the ship towards the end of the calendar year.

A strong finish, highlighted by an impressive run of results in the final month, helped the Whites secure a respectable 14th-place finish.

New VAR Data Highlights Leeds’ Misfortune

Several challenges stood in Leeds United’s way throughout the season. Injuries disrupted the squad at various stages, forcing Farke to repeatedly adjust his line-up and tactical approach.

The Leeds manager also faced significant pressure around November and came close to losing his job before the 49ers ownership group chose to maintain their confidence in him.

Questionable officiating decisions further complicated matters, particularly during the latter stages of the campaign.

Matches against Sunderland and Crystal Palace featured major refereeing controversies that went against Leeds at a crucial time in their battle to preserve their Premier League status.

According to analysis published by BBC Sport, Arsenal and Chelsea were among the clubs that benefited most from VAR interventions and on-field officiating errors this season.

At the opposite end of the scale, Leeds United finished bottom of the table, receiving no VAR or refereeing errors in their favour while suffering four decisions that went against them.

Costly Decisions Could Have Changed Leeds’ Season

Despite those setbacks, Leeds successfully retained their Premier League status and largely earned their points without relying on controversial decisions.

However, incidents such as the overlooked penalty appeal when Pascal Struijk was held inside the box against Sunderland, and Gabriel Gudmundsson’s dismissal against Crystal Palace, proved particularly damaging.

Had Leeds not shown such resilience and quality on the pitch, those moments could have had far more serious consequences for their season.

Throughout the campaign, Daniel Farke repeatedly voiced his concerns regarding Premier League officiating. Based on these latest findings, the Leeds boss may feel his frustrations were fully justified.
