Coventry city sensation star player leaves the club in a shock move

Coventry City favourite signs new Championship contract after ‘tough season’.

The former Sky Blues striker played only 11 games last season but has agreed fresh terms with Charlton Athletic

Matty Godden has committed himself to another season in the Championship.

With little more than a week left on his previous deal at Charlton Athletic the former Coventry City striker has signed a new one-year contract.

That comes after an under-par season last term, which saw the 34-year-old limited by injury and play just 11 times and score only twice.

The previous campaign, the first after ending a five-season spell at the CBS Arena, he had bagged 22 goals in 48 appearances and the second promotion of his career.

The first came when he fired the Sky Blues to the League One title in 2020, bagging 14 goals to the 50 he would score in his 156 appearances for the club.

Godden told the Charlton website : “It’s something that I was really keen to get done and I’m just glad it’s sorted now. My conversations with the gaffer have been really positive and he wanted me around the place.

“Unfortunately I missed out on scoring in front of the Covered End last year. My two goals came away from home, so that’s something that I can’t wait for. To hear my name sung, like it is every week, will be special.”

Addicks manager Nathan Jones was equally positive, making reference to last term’s troubles: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to agree a new contract with Matty.

“He’s been instrumental in our progression since he came to the football club. Last year was a tough season for him and a frustrating one in terms of the injuries he had, but he still came back and showed that when he does play, he impacts significantly.

“Matty’s an important part of the culture and the environment. I know he still has goals in him and that’s why we wanted to extend his stay at the football club.”

Canterbury-born Godden came through at Scunthorpe United before dropping into non-league and returning to the EFL with Stevenage. A good season at Peterborough United persuaded Mark Robins to pay around £750,000 for a much-travelled 28-year-old.
