Roy Keane has launched a scathing attack on Coventry City’s new home kit, describing the change from the club’s iconic sky blue colours as a disappointing departure from tradition ahead of their return to the Premier League.
The former Manchester United captain and Sky Sports pundit did not hold back when giving his thoughts on the new strip, which features bold blue and white vertical stripes and has already divided opinion among supporters.
Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Keane expressed his frustration at what he sees as a loss of identity for the Sky Blues.

“This is not the Sky Blues I know,” Keane said. “Coventry have always been known for that sky blue. It’s part of their history, part of what makes them unique. Changing it like this feels like they’re trying too hard to be something they’re not. I don’t like it. It doesn’t feel right for the club.”
Keane went on to criticise the design, suggesting it lacked the classic feel associated with Coventry City.
“You look at the great Coventry teams of the past and they wore that sky blue with pride. This new kit looks more like a fashion statement than a football kit. I just don’t think it represents the club properly. Fans deserve to see their team in colours that mean something to them.”
His comments have sparked a huge debate online, with some fans agreeing that the traditional sky blue should have been retained, while others defend the new design as a fresh start for the club’s Premier League return.
Coventry City’s Official Response
In response to the criticism, Coventry City issued a statement explaining the thinking behind the new kit.
“Coventry City’s new home kit draws its identity from one of the most cherished moments in the club’s history, the 1987 FA Cup win,” the club said. “The design pays tribute to that historic achievement and the pride it brought to the city. We believe this kit represents a new chapter while honouring our past.”
The club also emphasised that the change was made after extensive consultation with supporters and that the new strip has been well received by the majority of fans who have seen it.
Keane’s Wider Point
Keane, who is known for his strong opinions on football matters, used the kit debate to make a broader point about club identity.
“Clubs should be careful about changing things that matter to the fans,” he added. “The colour, the badge, the name — these things are important. Coventry have a great history and a loyal fanbase. They don’t need to reinvent themselves completely. Stick to what made you special.”
The new kit was unveiled earlier this week and will be worn for the first time in pre-season friendlies before the Premier League campaign begins.
Despite Keane’s criticism, many Coventry supporters have welcomed the new design, describing it as modern while still paying homage to the club’s past.
The debate is likely to continue as the kit goes on sale and fans get their first chance to see it in action.
This latest controversy comes as Coventry prepare for a tough return to the Premier League under manager Frank Lampard. The club will be hoping the new kit brings them good fortune as they look to establish themselves in the top flight once again.
Whether Roy Keane’s blunt assessment will have any impact on future kit decisions remains to be seen, but his comments have certainly got people talking.
