Champions League club ready to trigger £50m release clause for ex-Leeds United star

Roma WIN the Race for Former Leeds United Star as Manchester United Miss Out

Former Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville is on the verge of completing a sensational move to Italian giants AS Roma after the Serie A club surged ahead of Manchester United in the race for his signature.

Summerville has been one of the most sought-after attackers on the market following an impressive spell with West Ham United. Interest has arrived from clubs across the Premier League, Europe, and even the Saudi Pro League, but Roma have now emerged as clear favourites to secure the Dutch international.

Manchester United had been closely monitoring the 24-year-old as they searched for attacking reinforcements ahead of the new season. The Red Devils viewed Summerville as a potential replacement for Marcus Rashford, whose future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.

However, United’s slow approach has opened the door for Roma to make their move.

Reports from Italy claim that Roma have already reached a verbal agreement with Summerville over personal terms. The Serie A side are now prepared to trigger the £50 million release clause in his West Ham United contract, allowing them to complete the transfer without entering lengthy negotiations.

West Ham had previously rejected an opening bid worth around £34 million, insisting they would only consider offers that matched the winger’s valuation. Rather than continuing discussions, Roma have reportedly decided to meet the release clause in full before it expires.

Summerville is understood to be eager to work under Gian Piero Gasperini, with the opportunity to play Champions League football making the move even more attractive.

Manchester United’s pursuit has stalled because the club are still trying to resolve Rashford’s future. With Barcelona deciding against making his loan move permanent, United have prioritised finding a solution for the England international before investing heavily in another wide forward.

That hesitation appears to have cost them.

For Leeds United supporters, Roma’s interest could be the perfect outcome. Summerville remains one of the club’s most popular former players after his outstanding performances at Elland Road, and many fans would have been frustrated to see him strengthen one of Leeds’ biggest domestic rivals.

Instead, the Dutch winger now looks set to begin an exciting new chapter in Serie A.

If Roma activate the £50 million release clause as expected, the deal could be completed within the next few days, ending Manchester United’s hopes of signing the former Leeds United star and taking one of Europe’s most exciting wingers to the Italian capital.
