Leeds United have suffered a huge transfer blow after top target Julian Brandt turned down a move to Elland Road and signed a three-year contract with Ajax.
The German international was heavily linked with Leeds following the expiration of his Borussia Dortmund deal, with the Whites making a serious push to secure his signature. Brandt’s father even visited Thorp Arch for discussions, fueling speculation that a deal was close.
But Ajax swooped in and won the race.
Brandt revealed that Ajax’s ambitious project, attacking style of football, and the passion shown by the club’s hierarchy convinced him to choose Amsterdam over all other options.
The 30-year-old also admitted that Ajax’s famous 4-0 demolition of Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League left a lasting impression on him. The electric atmosphere inside the Johan Cruyff Arena and the quality of football displayed that night remained in his memory and played a role in his final decision.
