Sunderland centre-back Omar Alderete is set to leave the Stadium of Light after a £17.8 million transfer was agreed with Turkish giants Beşiktaş.
The 29-year-old Paraguay international has attracted strong interest this summer, and negotiations between the two clubs have now reached an advanced stage. Sources close to the deal confirm that personal terms have been settled and that only final formalities remain before the move is officially completed.
Alderete joined Sunderland from Getafe in 2025 for a fee of around £10.4 million plus add-ons. He quickly established himself as a reliable presence in the heart of defence, earning praise for his physicality, aerial ability and composure on the ball. His consistent performances helped the Black Cats secure a strong Premier League campaign and European qualification.
A source familiar with the negotiations said:
“Omar has been one of Sunderland’s most solid performers since arriving. The fee reflects his importance to the team and the level he has reached in the Premier League. Beşiktaş have moved decisively to get the deal done.”
The reported £17.8 million package represents a healthy profit for Sunderland on a player who still has several years left on his contract (until June 2029). However, the club’s hierarchy are understood to have accepted the offer after the player indicated a willingness to explore a new challenge in the Turkish Super Lig.
One figure close to the situation added:
“Sunderland are reluctant to lose a player of his quality, but the size of the bid made it difficult to turn down. The funds will allow them to reinvest in the squad as they prepare for another demanding season of Premier League and Europa League football.”
Alderete’s departure would leave a significant gap in Régis Le Bris’ defensive options. The French manager has relied on the Paraguayan’s experience and leadership at the back, and replacing him will now become a priority before the transfer window closes.
