Roy Keane has never been afraid to speak his mind and this time the Manchester United legend has delivered a detailed breakdown comparing Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. Speaking on a recent podcast, Keane listed six major points after watching Brobbey’s strong performances at the 2026 World Cup.
“Brobbey has that same raw power as Haaland,” Keane said. “He’s difficult to handle in the box. You can see why clubs are already circling him.”
The Irishman went on to praise the finishing instinct of both players. “Both have that ice-cold finishing. Brobbey is clinical like Haaland. He doesn’t need five chances to score.”
Keane also highlighted the frightening combination of speed and strength. “Haaland is a machine, but Brobbey has shown he can do the same — running in behind and bullying centre-backs.”
On work rate, Keane noted, “I like that Brobbey presses and works hard. Haaland has improved in that area too, but Brobbey is already showing the hunger.”
He touched on mentality as well. “Both have that winner’s mentality. Brobbey looks like he believes he belongs at the highest level — just like Erling did when he first broke through.”
Keane finished with perhaps his strongest compliment. “If Brobbey keeps developing, he could reach Haaland levels. He’s got the tools. The question is whether he has the consistency.”
Overall, Keane stopped short of saying Brobbey is already at Haaland’s level but made it clear the Sunderland star has the attributes to become one of Europe’s top strikers. “He’s not there yet, but the potential is massive. Sunderland have a gem on their hands.”
Brobbey has been in excellent form for both club and country, attracting serious interest from several European clubs. Sunderland fans are hoping the club can keep hold of him, with many placing a £90million-plus valuation on the forward as the summer transfer window continues.
