Thomas Tuchel Snaps at ITV Reporter After England Beat Norway to Reach World Cup Semi-Finals

England manager Thomas Tuchel found himself at the centre of a fiery post-match exchange after the Three Lions booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway.

Despite progressing to the last four thanks to another match-winning display from Jude Bellingham, Tuchel made it clear he was far from satisfied with England’s performance—and quickly shut down suggestions that his players had shown any weakness in mentality.

England Edge Past Norway

England were made to work hard in the sweltering Miami heat as Norway took a surprise lead through Andreas Schjelderup, whose mishit cross looped over Jordan Pickford and into the net.

Bellingham restored parity just before half-time before grabbing his second goal in extra time, reacting quickest after Morgan Rogers’ effort was spilled by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

The victory sends England into a blockbuster World Cup semi-final against Argentina.

Tuchel Admits He Wasn’t Happy

Although England got the result they needed, Tuchel admitted afterwards that the display left plenty to be desired.

Speaking during his television interview, he said:

“The result is fantastic, we’re in the last four, it’s amazing, but I’m not happy with the performance.”

The German coach felt England made life unnecessarily difficult for themselves.

“We made life very, very difficult for ourselves in the way we played, how we played. Sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough, not repetitive enough. We were lucky today.”

Heated Exchange With ITV

The interview then became tense when ITV reporter Gabriel Clarke suggested England’s issues may have been linked to mentality.

Clarke asked whether the occasion had affected the players before following up with:

“Mentality thing?”

Tuchel immediately rejected the suggestion.

“No, nothing. Mentality? How can you ask about mentality now? This is pure mentality.”

The England boss grew increasingly animated as he defended his players.

“It’s not about mentality.”

When Clarke tried to clarify his point, Tuchel doubled down.

“There’s no mentality problem. This is pure mentality. You can bottle it up and sell it.”

He concluded by insisting England’s shortcomings were purely technical rather than psychological.

“It’s the quality of our game. That’s it. It has nothing to do with mentality.”

England Still Chasing World Cup Glory

While Tuchel clearly expects more from his side, England remain firmly on course for World Cup success.

The Three Lions have shown resilience throughout the tournament, coming from behind once again to secure another knockout victory. However, Tuchel knows significant improvement will be needed before facing an Argentina side packed with attacking quality.

With Jude Bellingham continuing to deliver on the biggest stage and England now just one win away from the World Cup final, the pressure—and expectations—continue to grow.

The Bottom Line

England are into the World Cup semi-finals, but Thomas Tuchel wasn’t interested in celebrating a below-par performance. Instead, the England boss fiercely defended his players after being questioned about their mentality, insisting the issue was one of quality—not character—as attention now turns to a huge showdown with Argentina.
