Former Celtic striker appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court this week in connection with alleged match-fixing offences.
The 34-year-old, who enjoyed a successful spell at Celtic and earned multiple caps for Scotland, is facing two charges on indictment relating to conspiracy and being concerned in an alleged fraudulent scheme.
It is understood the allegations are linked to an ongoing investigation into suspected match-fixing activities.
Griffiths was scheduled to appear before the court on May 21 but was permitted to be absent when the case was called. During the hearing, his legal representative entered no plea on his behalf.
The case was committed for further examination, with Sheriff John Cook granting bail at the conclusion of the private petition hearing.
Griffiths is not the only footballer involved in the case.
Several other current and former professional players are also facing the same charges, including , former Celtic midfielder , ex-Livingston player , and footballer Conan McDiarmid.
The group previously appeared in court earlier this year, where no pleas were entered and proceedings were continued.
At this stage, the allegations remain before the courts and no findings have been made. The legal process is ongoing, with further hearings expected as prosecutors continue their case.
For many football fans, the development comes as a shock given Griffiths’ profile in Scottish football. During his time at Celtic, he established himself as one of the country’s most recognisable forwards, winning multiple trophies and scoring crucial goals for club and country.
Now, however, attention has shifted away from football and toward the legal proceedings that are set to continue in the months ahead.
The case remains active, and all accused individuals are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.
