Leeds United exit confirmed as Champions League club push for deal

The goalkeeping situation at Leeds United has become increasingly uncertain in recent weeks. The Whites recently secured captain Ethan Ampadu’s future by handing him a new four-year contract extension at Elland Road.

The club has also confirmed that several first-team players have been offered new deals, with Karl Darlow, Sam Byram, and Alex Cairns all receiving contract proposals as their current agreements approach expiration.

However, Darlow’s future remains particularly unclear. Manchester United have emerged as serious admirers of the Welsh goalkeeper, and journalist Sam Luckhurst reported on Friday that the veteran stopper could be on his way out of Elland Road.

If Darlow departs, there is a genuine possibility that Lucas Perri could be the only senior goalkeeper under contract this summer. Yet even the Brazilian’s position is not entirely secure, with reports suggesting Leeds would be willing to consider offers for him.

Leeds United goalkeeper attracting Champions League interest

Leeds have already confirmed that Illan Meslier will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this month. The French goalkeeper will not be offered fresh terms, bringing an end to his long association with the Whites.

Meslier has divided opinion among supporters over the past year. During Leeds’ promotion-winning campaign, Daniel Farke made the difficult decision to drop him following a string of costly mistakes. Karl Darlow stepped in between the posts, helping Leeds secure the league title and promotion back to the Premier League.

Now, after making more than 200 appearances for the club, the 26-year-old is preparing for a new chapter. According to SportsBoom, Ligue 1 side Lille are interested in signing the Frenchman during the summer transfer window.

As a free agent once his contract officially expires, Meslier will be free to negotiate with any club. Lille are believed to value both his experience and the potential they feel he still possesses.

Leeds may have made a costly Meslier mistake

It became increasingly clear last season that Illan Meslier’s time at Leeds was nearing its conclusion. After several inconsistent campaigns, confidence in him as the club’s undisputed number one had faded.

However, allowing a goalkeeper of his profile to leave for nothing could prove to be a costly error.

Leeds had ample opportunity to extend Meslier’s contract last year, which would at least have protected his transfer value. Instead, they now face the prospect of losing him without receiving a fee.

The situation could become even more problematic if Karl Darlow also opts to leave, with Manchester United reportedly presenting an attractive option. The 49ers ownership group therefore have a significant task ahead as they attempt to resolve Leeds United’s goalkeeping issues this summer.
