Coventry City are intensifying their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, with manager Frank Lampard drawing a clear line in the sand over the player he believes is essential for the club’s Premier League return.
The 24-year-old English shot-stopper, who spent last season on loan at the CBS Arena, has become the central figure in Coventry’s summer transfer plans. After helping the Sky Blues win the Championship title with an outstanding campaign, Rushworth has returned to Brighton — but Lampard is determined to bring him back on a permanent basis.
Lampard’s Firm Stance
Frank Lampard has left no doubt about where he stands on the matter. Speaking during pre-season, the Coventry boss was characteristically direct.
“Carl is our number one target. I have been very clear with the board from the start. He was outstanding for us last season and I want him here permanently. There is no confusion about that.”
Lampard continued:
“He played every league game, kept 17 clean sheets, and showed the mentality we need. In the Premier League you need a goalkeeper you can trust completely. Carl gives us that. I am drawing a line in the sand on this one — he is the priority.”
The former Chelsea and England midfielder’s comments underline just how important the deal has become for Coventry’s preparations.
The Ongoing Pursuit
Coventry have already made two formal bids for Rushworth. The first, understood to be around £20 million, was rejected by Brighton. A second improved offer, reported to be in the region of £26.5 million plus add-ons, also failed to meet the Seagulls’ valuation.
Brighton are believed to be holding out for a package closer to £35–40 million. Despite the significant gap, Coventry remain undeterred.
A senior figure at the club confirmed the strength of the manager’s position:
“Frank has made his feelings very clear. He does not want to move on to other options until every avenue with Carl has been explored. The club is backing him on this.”
Why Rushworth Matters So Much
Rushworth’s performances last season were exceptional. He was a key reason behind Coventry’s best defensive record in the Championship, combining excellent shot-stopping with calm distribution and strong leadership from the back.
For a newly-promoted side, securing a reliable and proven goalkeeper is often the difference between survival and an immediate return to the second tier. Lampard sees Rushworth as the foundation on which the rest of the team can be built.
“You cannot compete at this level without stability between the posts,” Lampard explained.
“Carl already knows the club, the players, the staff and the fans. That continuity is valuable. He is still young, he is English, and he has shown he can handle pressure. That is exactly what we need.”
Lampard was open about the hierarchy of targets:
“We are always prepared and we look at options. But my preference has not changed. Carl is the one I want. Until that door is closed, we will keep pushing.”
The pursuit of Carl Rushworth sits at the heart of Coventry’s summer strategy under owner Doug King and Frank Lampard. The club have already completed permanent deals for Frank Onyeka, Loum Tchaouna and Aurèle Amenda, showing a willingness to invest heavily for Premier League survival.
Landing Rushworth would represent the biggest single statement of the window so far. It would not only secure a high-quality goalkeeper but also send a strong message that Coventry are serious about competing rather than merely surviving.
Fans have largely backed the club’s determination, with many viewing Rushworth as the most important piece of unfinished business from last season’s promotion campaign.
Negotiations between Coventry and Brighton remain ongoing. While the two clubs are still some distance apart on the fee, there is belief at the CBS Arena that a compromise can eventually be reached before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
Lampard remains patient but resolute.
“These deals take time. We respect Brighton’s position, but we also know what we want. We will keep working on it.”
