Rangers remain in negotiations with Bailey Rice as they attempt to secure the midfielderās long-term future at Ibrox.
The 19-year-old joined the club on a free transfer in 2022, but opportunities in the first team have been limited, with Rice making only 16 appearances since arriving in Glasgow.
This season has proven especially frustrating for the youngster. He featured just once ā a 45-minute appearance against Alloa Athletic in the Scottish Cup back in August ā before suffering a training-ground injury in November that prematurely ended his campaign.
Despite that setback, manager Danny Rohl is reportedly keen to keep Rice at the club.
However, convincing the teenager to stay may not be straightforward, with growing interest from several clubs across Europe.
Latest on Riceās contract situation
Rice had been heavily tipped to leave Rangers this summer, although no final decision has yet been confirmed regarding his future.
According to a report from Rangers Review on 21 May, discussions between the club and Rice are ongoing, with the player currently considering his options.
The report also claims that both Ajax and Schalke are monitoring the situation closely, though it remains unclear whether negotiations are progressing positively or still some distance from an agreement.
Why the latest update could change things
Reports earlier this year suggested Rice had no intention of extending his stay at Ibrox, making this latest development a notable shift.
Premier League sides Aston Villa, West Brom, and Cardiff City had previously been linked with moves for the Scotland youth international on a free transfer.
Still, the fact that talks are continuing indicates Rice has not completely ruled out remaining in Glasgow, contrary to earlier speculation.
The midfielder is expected to seek assurances over playing time after struggling for opportunities under multiple managers during his time at the club.
Rohl has already spoken about the importance of building a strong Scottish core within the squad, and Rice could still become an important figure in those plans if he continues to develop as hoped.
From Rangersā perspective, retaining the youngster would make sense. Even if he eventually departs, keeping hold of him long enough to command a transfer fee would be far more beneficial than losing him for nothing.
