Leeds United Mainstay’s Exit Now ‘Expected’ After Major Development

Leeds United’s attention in recent days appears to have shifted more towards potential departures than incoming transfers. Matters became a little clearer after chairman Paraag Marathe outlined the club’s plans for the future.

Marathe stressed that while the ownership group remains committed to strengthening the squad, any spending this summer will be approached sensibly. Leeds invested more than £100 million following their return to the Premier League last year, but matching that level of expenditure again could prove difficult.

The introduction of the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) regulations will significantly influence how clubs manage their finances and squad building.

As a result, Leeds are likely to sanction a number of departures before pursuing major additions in the transfer market. Defender Max Wober has already cast doubt over his long-term future at Elland Road, suggesting he could be among the first players to move on.

Leeds United star could depart this summer

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow has emerged as a target for Manchester United over the past week. The speculation surfaced shortly after the season concluded, with the experienced Welsh international’s current contract set to expire at the end of the month.

Leeds recently confirmed that they have offered Darlow a new deal, but the 35-year-old has yet to commit his future by signing it.

Manchester United may now intensify their pursuit following a significant update. According to Samuel Luckhurst, Darlow is now “expected” to leave Elland Road this summer, a development that could benefit Michael Carrick’s side.

The report claims that the club are preparing to offload both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir during the transfer window, creating room for reinforcements between the posts. Darlow is believed to rank highly on their shortlist of potential replacements.

A major concern for the 49ers

If Michael Carrick’s team proceed with plans to sell two senior goalkeepers, their interest in Darlow is almost certain to increase. That would place Leeds in a difficult position and leave them vulnerable to losing the veteran shot-stopper.

Manchester United would be capable of offering Darlow an attractive financial package, as well as the opportunity to be involved in European competition while serving as backup to their first-choice goalkeeper.

Leeds, therefore, may need to make a compelling proposal if they hope to convince him to remain at Elland Road. The prospect of regular first-team football could also prove decisive in the veteran’s final decision.

The Whites can ill afford to lose Darlow, particularly after confirming Illan Meslier’s departure.

Should Darlow also leave this summer, Lucas Perri could find himself as the club’s only senior goalkeeper under contract — a situation that would create yet another significant issue for Leeds to address before the new campaign begins.
