Leeds United are stepping up their summer recruitment drive as they look to have several new arrivals through the door before pre-season begins in the coming weeks.
The Whites have already reached an agreement to sign Harry Wilson and are hopeful of finalising the deal before the weekend.
Meanwhile, Leeds remain in discussions with Borussia Dortmund over a move for Julian Brandt, with Daniel Farke eager to bring the experienced German playmaker to Elland Road.
The club are also advancing in their pursuit of Southampton midfielder Shea Charles. However, his potential arrival could have significant consequences for the current squad. According to journalist Graham Smyth, signing the Northern Ireland international would likely lead to a notable departure before the transfer window shuts.
Graham Smyth Predicts Major Leeds Exit
Leeds currently possess plenty of midfield options, yet they continue to prioritise a move for Charles this summer.
The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the club’s key transfer targets, and Leeds are keen to complete a deal in the coming weeks.
However, Smyth believes the addition of Charles would almost certainly force the club to offload one of their existing midfielders.
Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, Smyth said:
“It’s all gone quiet on that front [outgoings].”
“If they get Shea Charles, I think someone in the midfield area leaves.”
“I can’t see them going into the season with Charles, Gruev, Stach, Longstaff and Tanaka all competing for two positions.”
Who Could Leave Leeds?
Anton Stach and Ethan Ampadu appear to be untouchable members of Daniel Farke’s squad, while Ao Tanaka remains highly regarded after another impressive campaign and a strong World Cup showing.
That leaves Ilia Gruev and Sean Longstaff as the most likely candidates to depart should Charles arrive at Elland Road.
Longstaff endured an inconsistent first season after joining from Newcastle United last summer and found himself playing a reduced role during the closing stages of the campaign.
Gruev’s situation is also uncertain. The midfielder has entered the final year of his contract, and there has been little indication that Leeds are preparing to offer him an extension.
His recent knee injury could also complicate any potential transfer, making it more difficult for Leeds to find a buyer before the window closes.
There is no doubt that Charles is a player Leeds are determined to sign. If the club successfully secures his services, one current midfielder may have to make way to balance the squad ahead of the new season.
